I was just browsing Lew Bryson's site and noticed that the Pittsburgh Hofbrauhaus is not going to be a reality this year. I don't know the details but, he suggested that the site was still being prepared and this would not be a reality until next year?? I know there has been some interest here about this, so I thought I would pass it along.

I can't recall at the moment, are they going to be importing or brewing on site?

The plan is to brew on site I believe. Of course, this has seemed to to be one delay after another. I don't know if anything has changed or not.

I believe they have one in Las Vegas, and they Brew On site.
Apparently, it is the only other place on earth that brews HB besides the Munich haus.

Newport, KY brews on site.

Actually they do not brew on site, it is imported from Hofbrauhaus Munich. At least that was the case in April last time I was down there. :)
Our Hofbräu beer is brewed using the original recipes handed down by Wilhelm V, the Duke of Bavaria, (over 400 years ago) and is imported direct from the breweries in Munich, Germany.
~edit: Las Vegas, that is.

I had no idea they built one in Cincinnati (Newport) until the above was posted. I always assumed the Vegas Hofbrauhaus was the first in the states, but it's simply the first exact replica, apparently.
Why couldn't they have the Hofbrauhaus Newport when I lived there? lol

Quit complainin', they followed you to Vegas, didn't they?
They've been talking about a branch in Chicago for as long as they have in Pittsman -- still nothing. :(

Ok, ok, good point. :) It's still tourist expensive, though. When you go to the Strip, everything costs like 75-100% more than out here where we normal folk live. We stopped in one night after playing golf down at Callaway (the course with lights on it south of the strip), and for 2 beers, a bratwurst plate, and a pretzel, we spent like $50. Overpriced, but the beer was worth it for sure.

Oh, the beers were fine (Liter size). I'm more protesting the bratwurst and pretzel being over half the bill. :) Still not a big deal, believe me. The beer more than made up for it.
My cousin and I did each pick up one of the glass liter steins for consumption of our homebrew once we have some in kegs (not included in the $50 tab).

Has anyone been to the one in Nati? I'm up there for four days at the end of September and I know there isn't a lot to check out...

Yeah, I've been to that one. It's a cab ride across the river to Newport. I'd recommend going just to experience it.
They also have a great aquarium in Newport too. Depending on when you're going to be there at the end of September, you may be able to make Oktoberfest-Zincinatti on the 22nd and 23rd.

Astros and Cubbies are in town at the end of September too.
Hark can give you a much better lowdown on what to do while you're there, but Cincy can be a fun town.

So wait--
They have these all over the place and one in Seattle?
What gives with that?

I thought it was just Newport, Vegas and Milwaukee in the US.

The only sanctioned "replicas" of the Hofbrauhaus now open here in the 'States are in Cincy and Vegas. Back 3 or 4 years ago, when these 2 opened, the HB was telling the press that they'd like to open them all over; Milwaukee, Chicago, and Pittsburgh on the list. To date, I know of none that have opened.
In Milwaukee and Chicago there are 2 taverns that look to have some sanctioning from HB, but they're small and far from HB replicas.
Here's the Chicago spot: http://www.uberstein.com/ note the Wrigley proximity.
Here's the Milwaukee location: http://www.oldgermanbeerhall.com/index2.html note the Bradley Ctr. proximity.
And review with some not so favorable comments :http://www.onmilwaukee.com/dining/articles/germanbeerhall.html

I've been to three HB Hauses. Munich several times, Las Vegas several Times, Newport once. Of the two in the States, LV flys the beer in. They do not brew on site and the beer and food are great. I like this place better than most of the brewpubs in Vegas. Newport is a brewpub and the beer was good as was the food. I'd definitely go back to all three. BTW neither of the two in the US are "exact replicas' of the HB in Munchen. They are similar in style though. I for one can't wait for Pittsburgh to get theirs. I'm gearing up for a western PA beer tour soon. It's a shame this place has not yet been built.

Unfortunately, I missed it while I was there, and only hit the bier hall. But I was able to go to a nice nieghborhhod bier garten during the week and hit Augustiner's keller on the weekend.

Which neighborhood garden did you make? The Augustiner Keller is a sentimental favorite as it's just up the street from the Hotel my friends and I would always use.
Here's a review on the HB Keller from the Beer Drinker's Guide to Munich (interesting to note that most all Kellers have a hall that stays open year 'round. Maybe it's really time to plan my retirement in Bavaria):
Hofbräu Keller shares the name but not the fame of the Hofbräuhaus. Locally, though, Munich's beerhall and beer garden crowd might list this place as their favorite Hofbräu of any kind. As the name suggests, this is more beer garden than beerhall, but it has plenty of both to make it worthwhile. Also, steady improvements, DECLINING beer prices (this is not a typo) have increasingly raised our assessment and ratings over the years. Incongruously, it sports a cellar cocktail lounge that is a meeting place for Munich's aging jet setters. In fact on any weekend evening, you'll find enough lounge lizards in attendance to populate an entire Lawrence Welk concert. Hofbräu Keller is getting better, but we have it now at 3 1/2 beers.
Not sure of the date on this review...

I stayed outside of Munich in Unterschleißheim at Victors Residenz Hotel. I don't know the name of the garten offhand, but it was nestled in a neighborhood and connected with a restaraunt. It was about 9 blocks away from the hotel. About a dozen picnic tables and very friendly people. As were most of the people I met. I'd drink a liter of helles or dunkel and try to make small talk with the locals. They knew enough english to understand me and I knew enough german to amuse them.
I can't say enough good things about my stay. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Thx for the info Hooky. Looks like I miss the fest by one freaking day! Que sera sera... but dammit that would've been fun. I'll check out the hofbrauhaus for sure. The only place I've been to was the Rock Bottom on that square downtown. It was really close to where I was staying...

That sucks you'll miss it. It's a lot of fun. My wife and I actually stayed in Convington on our 2nd night as husband and wife. We made the Oktoberfest part of our honeymoon and had a blast.

Yeah, Cincy's Oktoberfest is a lot of fun, it was always right at the same time as school started at UC, so we used to go every year in college.
