View Full Version : Craft Beer in Movies

I watched the movie "Orange County" on cable the other night, and was impressed. Well, the movie was ok, but I was most impressed with a John Lithgow scene where he's clearly drinking a bottle of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. I started to think about other movies where craft brews are prominently displayed, and could only think of one off the top of my head: The Tao of Steve, set in Santa Fe, where many of the characters are visibly drinking Santa Fe Pale Ales and New Belgium products.
Any other movies that feature craft beers, as opposed to macro swill, that come to mind?

I've seen many movies set in Maine that feature Geary's Pale Ale quite prominently. "In the Bedroom" with Marisa Tomei & Sissy Spacek (good movie) and Stephen King's "Dreamcatcher" come to mind.
Product placement in big budget movies is bought and paid for by the big guys for the most part. But I think many smaller/independent flicks look for interesting and original set pieces - including good brew.
Does anyone's local brewer advertise on TV? I know my local has a few radio spots (quite comical) and have a few commercial clips on their website but I've never actually seen them on TV. I hear they run the ads on certain channels (ESPN2) after 11pm.
Cheers!

A neat movie with bad beer is Blue Velvet. A David Lynch movie. Dennis Hopper prefers ( to put it mildly) PBR. I always try to see which beers they are drinking whenever there is a drinking scene on TV or the movies.

I don't think they actually drink it, but they usually have a sixer ON TOP of the fridge in Joey's apartment. Why not in it? Because then you wouldn't know how hip and cool they're supposed to be. I don't think I've ever seen them drink one, but I'm not a die-hard fan.

"Friends"? I'm not familiar with it.

FRIENDS IS LAME!
Makes you wonder though on shows like that if some of the companies did not pay for product placement?
Still stand by the Drew Carey show. They make their own beer "Buzz beer" and when they are not drinking BUzz you will see them drinking something from Great Lakes Brewing Company right there in Cleveland.

Good call on the Drew Craey show and GLBC. Sheesh, right in my own backyard, and I missed that one!

C'mon you guys, admit it - you're watchin' just for Jennifer Anniston! ;)
If you catch a scene in Joey and (now) Rachael's apartment (not that *I* watch either), there is almost always a different six-pack of some good beer on top of the refrigerator. A fellow good beer drinker pointed that out to me a while ago and it's remained pretty consistent throughout the series.
It *was* pretty funny to watch the gang drinking Guinness Pub Draught -- out of the cans!

What was the nostalgic Maine beer the prisoners were drinking in "The Shawshank Redemption?" Another movie based on a Stephen King story.

Do you mean after they tarred the roof? I believe it was "Bohemia", a Mexican brand. Funny thing is, there were no twist-off bottle caps back then. They didn't appear until the 60's. Just a little movie trivia.
Cheers!

Really? It was Bohemia? Geez, I don't remember. I don't remember them twisting the tops off either, that's usually a detail I'll stand up and point out in a movie, "Hey, it's 1947 - there's no stinking twist-offs!" ;)
I'll need to check out that scene again - was Bohemia popular in Maine or something?

It was Black Label "Bohemia Style" beer, not the actual Bohemia beer we know today.

What was Black Label Bohemia Style? As in Carling's Black Label?

I could not find any more information on it, but remember from watching the movie that they did say Bohemia Style. I was able to find some quotes from the script but nothing else.

In the 50s and 60s Carling Black Label out of Baltimore was a readily available cheap beer as was Gunther from Baltimore as well. Don't know if it made it up to Maine or not.

I was watching a movie on IFC last night called Dopamine. It's set in SFO and the female lead goes into a bar, sits down and orders a "Steam". Although what was in her glass looked considerably lighter.
It's at least a mention, if not a sighting...

Carlings was a big seller here in Maine in the 60's. 16 oz bottles by the case was only $4-6 depending on where you got them
Hey Mabel, Black Label
I think they sponsered the Red Sox at one time

If you're a Stargate SG-1 fan, you'll notice that Richard Dean Anderson always goes for a decent brew. At the very least it will be Guiness, can't remember other labels I've seen off the top of my head, but never a BMC.

a scene in King of Queens is set in Deacon's apartment. in the background is a box of "beers of the world" and for a short second on the table are two open bottles of Unibroue's La Fin Du Monde. No real label showing but if you've had the beer, the silver foil on the neck is a dead giveaway. I had to rewind to confirm but I was right :D

I've had some Sierra Nevada Pale Ale sightings on the King of Queens.

I think I've mentioned this elsewhere but since this has been dug up from beyond the grave, in "Mother, Jugs, and Speed" (1976) Bill Cosby ("Mother") always has a cooler filled with bottles of Anchor Steam by his side.

When I did the search to find this thread, I saw yours on '70's movies and beer...still a cool reference and a classic movie.

If they were truly cool, they'd 1. feature a craft brew style beer more prominently. 2. Switch beers frequently.
How they feature the better is up tp debate (even though--and thank the lord--the show is canceled), and suggestion
