Welcome to the board. I am not sure what I'm having tonight yet. Maybe a Victory Storm king but more probably Coniston Bluebird.

is it just me? or does the 120 seem closer to a barleywine then it is to an i.p.a.?

i hail from chicago and am fortunate to work 3 blocks from sam's wine and liquor (http://samswine.com), a HUGE store with two very knowledgable beer staffers, as well as anything you would want to know about wine or liquor. chicago, with the seasons, public transportation and some great pubs and stores, has turned me into much more of a beer drinker than I ever was in LA (tho most of my time in LA was underage, but still...)
never tried the 120 so i wouldnt know, but i would believe it. they do call it an "imperial" ipa.

I have not yet tried one of the 120s. I have heard that it is indeed like a barleywine and not like the 60 or 90. I will give a review when I have tasted one.

Last night I had the last Spaten O-fest in my fridge, and my first tast of North Coast Brewing's Pranqster.
The Pranqster is a Belgian Style Golden Ale that I enjoyed very much. Orange-amber in color, fruity and spicy and extremely drinkable!
Welcome DIFan and Student!

I have a bottle of Pranqster is the cellar. Maybe I'll break that out tonight. Last night I enjoyed a Smuttynose Imperial Stout that has been "sleeping" for the past 10 months. A little small for an Imperial but rosaty & chocolatey and oh so good.
Cheers and welcome 'Drunkenirishfan'!

I have a Bomber of Smutty's Big A IPA that i'm probably gonna open this weekend. Have you had it? Here's hopin' it's good. I like Smuttynose beers, so I don't think I'll be too dissappointed.

It's good....if you like hoppy IPAs. It's got an assload of them. The 2002 Big A was more English in style whereas this has a more Pacific NW feel to it. It's hopping rate and abv might make this a good candidate for cellaring for a little while to mellow it out.
The Octoberfest Lager is the current big beer - solid but hoppier than your typical Ofest. Scotch Ale is up next - can't wait!!!
Check out this link for good info on the Big Beer Series:

The other great thing about Sam's is that it's right next door to Goose Island on Clybourn! Go in, have a pull from the beer engine, maybe a home-made chip or two, swing past Sam's on the way home. Life is good!
Welcome to the forum, where are you hanging out in Chi?
BTW - the Imperial IPA is a moniker started by some of the newer U.S. micro brewers to describe their stronger IPAs. It's derived from Imperial Stouts, which are traditionally stronger stouts originally brewed by English breweries for Russian (supposedly requested by the Czarina of the day - thus the Imperial title) trade in the 1700s.

Happy 600th Steveh! I drank an exquisit Conniston Bluebird last night. Bottle conditioned. Lucky I have 3 more of them. I would have given my impressions but my cable was accidentally cut by workers in my yard.

I'm starting to drop the ball on my welcomes etc......welcome to the site, drunkenirishfan;
and happy 600th, steveh!!
It has to be Bass Ale, now that Leinenkugel no longer makes the maple nut brown. That was a mighty fine beer!
Maybe I'll break out my Mr. Beer brewery this month and try to make one. Maybe not...

No, not really. The kits are not bad, if you brew them like an extract. The Mr. Beer remark was a joke in bad taste (sic). When I moved from Fairbanks to Missouri a few years ago, I lost a bunch of stuff, but the Mr. Beer survived. I have not brewed since that time.
I was tempted to try it again, but instead took a trip to Worm's Way last Friday and bought the stuff to do it right. It cost less then $60 to start from scratch the right way.
Thanks for the welcome.
