You really can't upgrade a Mr. Beer. You will end up repurchasing all of the equipment. I started on Mr. Beer myself, and while I am glad it opened my eyes to brewing, it did not have the equipement to do really good beer (plus they absolutely SOAK you on the cost of their ingredients).
The cheapest, most cost effective and most complete starter brew kit I have seen is the $79.95 Brewing Starter Kit (http://www.midwestsupplies.com/products/ProdBySubCat.aspx?SubCat=11166&fd=1) from Midwest Supplies. It has everything you need (except for a brew pot) to make REALLY good beer right off the bat.
You will spend $39 bucks on a Mr. Beer Kit, then everything you have bought will not be 'transferable' when you want to upgrade. With the kit above, your upgrade path will be to add stuff on (such as a turkey fryer, a wort chiller, more carboys, etc).
Good luck and
