1 lb. ground beef
1 onion
1 green pepper
2 cans kidney beans drained
28 oz. can crushed tomatoes
1 bottle schwarzbier/porter
1/4 cup white sugar
1 cup pumpkin puree (fresh works best, but canned is o.k.)
1 T chili powder
1 T cinnamon
1 T ginger
1 t nutmeg
pinch of ground cloves
fry ground beef until done.
add chopped pepper and onion for a few minutes.
add the rest of the ingredients and let simmer for a good hour or so.
if you like it hotter, add some tabasco.
thicker, more pumpkin.
do what you want for your own taste, itīs chili afterall!

Okay, I'll act as chili snob on this one -- no matter what Chaz says, no thanks Hertha. I'll stick with my traditional chili, this sounds too much like pumpkin soup -- with fried beef.

i promise you, the pumpkin is barely noticable. itīs more of a thicking agent, but, the taste is there.
oh, if any of you have kids and want to leave the beer out, a few teaspoons of molasses works well in place of the beer.

I'm willing to give it a try. I'm not all that big a fan of Cinci style which has more tomato and the cinnimon. I like Texas style more I suppose. And I think all chili should include beans. The real chilis from the migration roadhouses had anything they could add to stretch it out.

I think the ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove would do me in.
Give me ancho, chipotle, and cayenne.
But the Schwarzbier is a good touch! :)

What most people think of as "pumpkin flavor" is the spice mix that's dumped into the pies. Not that I'd really want that particular spice mix in my chili, though.
