I am planning an American Barleywine this weekend. It will be my first big beer and I am looking for recipe suggesitons...

I enjoy Avery's Hog Heaven and SN Bigfoot. I will be pitching onto a Wyeast 1056 yeast cake. I normally brew AG, but I will brew extract w/ grains if need be.

I do have Palmer's recipe to go by, but if any of you have some good ideas, I am anxious to hear them.

Thanks as always,
Ash

You could always do a "normal" sized AG batch, then add extract to achieve your target gravity. That would be a big partial mash, with all the advantages of both.

1056 craps out at ~11-12%. Keep that in mind. You may need to plus up with high gravity yeast if the beer is too big.

Good luck & don't forget the blowoff tube!

Amen to that brother.

I seem to mess up link postings so I will just point you in the direction. In the forum "Tasting Notes" there is a thread titled" Wortchillergoals Barleywine Surpeme". My recipe, read up to and inculding my recipe about record keeping, is located in that thread.

I have never used champange yeast. I just keep rousing a high alcohol strain when i do barleywines.

That is pretty slick B'dawg. I may try and update one of my recipes to adapt.

Wortchillergoal, I can't find your thread. Could it be under a different name? I would like to check it out.

Thanks guys.
