ok wow, i don't know where to begin, fist of all the patriots won't win, the bengals will win the AFC, second of all the cowboys will be awful and will once again be beaten horibly by the redskins within their division lets see, rookie coack vs. Joe gibbs, i just don't see the rookie having a chance

oh, and if your talking hockey, i rather like the caps new ddtions, not to mention the return to the old red white and blue for the uniforms, Ovy doesn't need much help to be a winner and ithink he may have it now.

I think Chelsea can make a run this year if they stay healthy...

Though my Blue hens seem to be in a hell of a tail spin. Here's hoping they can pull it together...

My American football team left town in the middle of the night during a snow storm... I heard some posers using the same name recently won a superbowl or something... Can't say as I was paying much attention...

.re Joe Gibbs, I hope he turns that mess around. If not, it's back to racing for him!!

Wade Phillips a rookie coach?

Been around a loooong time - head jobs in Denver and Buffalo and short interim stints in NO & Atlanta, not to mention being a (quite successful) defensive coordinator for many teams.

I'm hardly a Cowboys fan, though, so their success means little to me.

Everyone's jealous of Steeler nation, no fans follow their team like Steeler fans. I grew up in the burgh, but I've lived in Detroit, Dallas (cowboys suck!!), and now Houston. I've always found a large contingent of loyal Steelers fans everywhere I've lived. Believe it or not when the Steelers won their 5th SB a couple years ago, I was shocked at how may Steeler flags, stickers, shirts, etc.. that I saw around town, and that was before the game. Every city has a Steelers bar or pub of some type. I've never seen a Bengals bar, or a Patriots bar.

Although I bleed black & gold, I dont see how anyone can beat the Patriots. Tom Brady is awesome, and has pretty good taste in women.

The Cowboys wouldnt even make the playoffs in the AFC, they are a joke. How can anyone root for a team that sells itself just to win (T.O.). No Integrity.

The Steelers have a history of brutally beating the Bungals.

the pats have talent, but no chemistry, the players are not at all on the same page and have different styles.
plus, one hard hit on brady (please let it happen :) ), and the pats don´t win another game after.

Big assumption and very premature. Training camp has yet to open. Show me a team that's sailing smooth, without off-season personnel changes, contract disputes, coaching changes, etc.

Nothing wrong with different styles, either. Would you prefer to have a team with nothing but deep threats? Nothing but possession receivers? Nothing but between the tackles backs?

If after week 4, the Pats haven't figured out their roles and found some sort of groove, I'll start to be concerned.

While I've never wished harm on another player (OK....maybe Peyton Manning ;) ), you may be right on this one.

Though, I'll take my chances with Matt Cassell vs. Cleveland at home.

i´ll admit, it is a big presumption and very premature. but, if player history dictates anything, it is correct.
players can change? yeah possibly. but take a look at guys like pacman and vick. the world in there hands and too stubborn to change.
i should say, i´d never wish harm on another player either, that was a joke (or was it?). i mean, my teams qb almost died last year, so i know what that could mean.

Holy Moly.

So many Pittsburgh fans in here? One or two of you mentioned living here before. What area?

I live 10 minutes away in the North Hills Area (not the POS school district).

It'll be interesting to see the new coaching. Have to be hopeful after last years 8-8. You can never doubt the franchise tied for the most superbowl wins.

For those of you hating on the Steelers, they are without question the most popular team out of their home town.

I'll spare a few tears here by not telling some of you that you're delusional if you think your teams are going to win. I'm not saying steelers necessarily, but some of the teams mentioned....wow.

Err...someone made a hockey comment. Let's see....Pens made the playoffs with an 18, 19, and 20 year olds in their starting 10, and quite a few of those 10 were rookies. Those kids are just BOYS and they made the league look like fools. They're phenoms. No doubt Pens will show up their record last year and make it even farther now that they have a year under their belt.

As for the big Ovy vs. Cid debate that Pens haters started last year....You honestly have to be an idiot to think Ovy is nearly as talented, let alone better. 92 vs 120 regular season points. Ovy can score, nobody doubts it, but he can't make plays like Cid to save his life. Not only that but those 120 points were with much less experienced players. I forget the number now, but the average age on the penguins was amongst the lowest in the league....if we didn't have Recci's old bones (though i'm a fan), we'd be the lowest prob.

To make a long post short:

GO STEELERS
GO PENS
GO.............pirates?:(

Grew up in Plum, moved back after college & lived in Wilkins Twp.

FYI, for all the Steelers fans, I saw on Yahoo Sports that Lamar Woolley is doing a training camp diary. I assume he'll update it daily.

Bringing the thread towards beer, they actually ship Iron City to Houston. I've bought a few sixers (purely out of obligation), it still tastes like river water downstream of a bloated horse.

No doubt that the Pens will be a deacade long dynasty, its a question of when not if.

A teacher wanting to get off on the right foot with her students decided to talk football. She said," I am a Seahawks fan. Is any one here a Seahawks fan?"

Every student raised their hand except for one little girl. The teacher asked what team she was a fan of. the little girl replied that she was a Steelers fan.

"Why are you a Steelers fan?", asked the teacher.
The little girl told her because her mommy and daddy are Steeler fans. The little girl went to explain that she likes being like her mommy and daddy.

The teacher told her that she did not have to do everything that her mommy and daddy did. The teacher then said," What would you be if you mommy were stupid and your daddy was an idiot?"

"A Seahawks fan.", said the little girl.

I agree with the Thug comment, but there are alot of stand up guys in the league too.

One of many examples. Houston had a player the last couple of years named Ephraim Salaam (I think 06 was his last year). Although he is Muslim & obviously doesnt celebrate Christmas. Every year he does some big Santa toy drive event. He gives christmas toys to kids who otherwise would get nothing.

Look at Big Ben, I think I read that he did a bunch of stuff for local Fireman & their families.

Type Warrick Dunn & charity into google & you'll get hundreds of articles.

I'm not saying most of these guys cant do more, alot more, but it's easy (especially since that's all the media focuses on) to think all the players are like Vick or Pacman.

True. There are nearly 2000 players in the NFL, yet the same dozen or so guys seem to dominate the headlines, tabloids, ESPN "breaking news", etc. That's less than 1% of the player base.

So, the other 99% are average guys who have families, generally abide by the law, donate to (or start/manage) charities and use their wealth and fame to help others.

Sorry, I don't really want to take this thread too far off the beacon - I realize there are probably more goo guys than bad - but the good guys in the leagues need to stand up and drive out the ones who are giving them all the bad press. Until that time, it matters not to me what beer is being served at the stadium because I'm not going to be there.

I'm not sure exactly when or why all this stuff changed. Maybe it used to happen but we just didn't hear about it. When I was a kid we had sports idols like Yaz and Orr to name a few. My sister was Ken Harrelson's babysitter; if you didn't know who he was you'd have thought he was just another average guy.

We really need some old fashioned role models. If I never have to hear another story about someone like Vick (or "celebrities" like Paris and Lindsay) it will be a good start.

How do you propose they do that? There are team leaders that help create a positive atmosphere in the locker room, on the field and off. But if a team owner wants to spend $$$ on a risky player, he/she will.

Oh, it happened. You don't think professional athletes 50 years ago abused booze and drugs? Got into fights? Beat their wives? Were adulterers? Gambled illegally? Cheated the game they played? Etc., etc?

It's simply harder to hide from/cover up/explain away now.

Role models are probably present on every team in every league. They may not get the pub that some of their bad-boy teammates do, but they exist. Seek them out.

Remember though, these people are human. Not idols. Not perfection. They may.....drink alcohol. Enjoy a little weed now and then. Gamble in Vegas. Have children out of wedlock. Yet, they have good hearts, help people, champion causes and use their fame to others' advantage, as well as their own.

See through the crap the media wants you to believe and make up your own mind about who's worth cheering for.

I think a lot more of them than those you hear about are dumb thugs too. They get a pass in school because they have a talant that is marketable. So many just are not that smart. Many have an entourage of business people, friends, family, drug dealers and clingers on to help them spend their money and often after their short career playing is over they have lost most of what they had left in a few years. Many invest in failed businesses like car dealerships or restaurants. Many were just street punks to begin with and revert back. How many times have you heard stories of these guys hawking thier superbowl rings. I've done title searches on several for foreclosure on thier elaborate homes. I'm sure the percentage of thugs is small but don't think they are not there.

Then there are the stand up guys with a little class like Art Monk, Monte Coleman, Darrell Green, Cal Ripkin and others.

Bringing this back to the Steelers being the greatest Football franchise.

In the late 60's & early 70's, my dad was a steel worker. After work he & his buddies would stop by the local bars & down a few on the way home. He has several stories about running into the Steelers from those days. They would be having a few beers right along with the average workers.

He always said that they were regular guys. They were blue collar guys who happened to play in the NFL. Very approachable.

Being dumb and/or irresponsible with your money and thug life don't necessarily go hand in hand.

Lots of guys have sold their rings over the years. LOTS. Most have run into hard luck. Some their own doing through illegal activities. Some not so sinister - divorce, back taxes, gambling habit, poor financial planning. Some really don't cherish a material reminder of what they accomplished.

Boggles me that Art Monk is not in the Hall of Fame. One of my favortie players as a young kid. Yet a clown like Michael Irvin gets enshrined.

And while there's no denying Ripken's talent, I've heard more than one sports writer criticize his streak. Being an "Iron Man" is admirable but taking a day off now and then (what....10-15 per year?) might have benefitted both him and his team. Whatever, though. His is a record unlikely to ever be broken.

Chaz, there comes a time when you have to look at how much some fools are willing to pay for something and decide you're not that big of a fool. If enough people do that, they won't sell out and the owners will have to lower prices enough to maximize their profits. More money for beer and a flat screen.

Never went to the Club Level. In fact I've never been to Fed Ex Field. RFK I went to many, many times. But after my contract expired there was no way I was gonna renew for 900.00 a game. They offered to get me lesser seats for the same price I was paying for the old tix (535.00)
I am told that my old seats were pretty decent though.

Yes well back to the subject of Football!...I feel like a broken record here...It's ok by the way...I waited 30 years for someone to tell me how much they HATE the Patriots cuz they win too much!...I still have nightmares of growing up in NE and having everyone laugh at me because I said the Pats are my team....Laugh it now...Im thinking three more would be just about right...6 Superbowls is a nice round number!!

I second that, although it will be at least a year or two. I really dont see how anyone can beat the Pats this year, but that's why they play the games. NE didnt just reload this year, they upgraded to a much larger weapon.

Forget about Moss, and that's still a really good offense. Wes Welker is really underated. Imagine Moss & Stallworth deep and Welker & Watson underneath. Though, I'm not sure L Maroney can carry the load for the whole season.

The defense is aging especially at LB, but they did sign Adalius Thomas and were able to keep A Samuel.

I just dont see SD really being able to compete with NE.

As a long time Redskins fan, I'm pretty optimistic this year. Look how far you can go as a Mediocre team if you play in a bad division (See 06' Chicago Bears). McNabb isn't going to ever get back to his old form, the Giants are a mess, and the Cowboys.....2 words, Wade Phillips.

NFL sucks....

Go Bucks!

I'm ready for football season, because that means the 100+ degree days are gone. :)

Little Johnny was in his 4th grade class when the teacher asked the children what their fathers did for a living. All the typical answers came up - fireman, policeman, salesman, etc... Johnny was being uncharacteristically quiet and so the teacher asked him about his father.

"My father's an exotic dancer in a gay cabaret and takes off all his clothes in front of other men. Sometimes, if the offer's really good, he'll go out to the alley with some guy and make love with him for money."

The teacher, obviously shaken by this statement, hurriedly set the other children to work on some coloring, and took Little Johnny aside to ask him, "Is that really true about your father?"

"No," said Johnny, "He is an assistant coach for the Michigan Wolverines, but I was too embarrassed to say so."

NFL football. Another season I have to listen to a bunch of rabid fans of a team I grew up hating. Right now I'm waiting for the Red Sox to implode. The Yankees can then pass them by again, just like in 78. Will the yahoos at work shut up, NOOOO. Next comes the Brady show. May be this is the year of the Bills once again. I know we have a poor history with all the wide right kicks and that 'alleged' murder guy that was a great running back. Yes, I think he did it and should have been found guilty, but LA Co screwed it up.

It really sucks living in a city of your rivals. Lucky, or not for me, I somehow have always liked the Bruins. NFL means Hockey is about to start.

Pity. The Bruins are about the only local team without any press this year.

Been a looooooong time since they were relevant year in and year out.

You could always join me and root for the team that got Deion Branch from NE... now there's a reason to celebrate, isn't it?

I know... the 'Hawks are the butt of just about every joke and have been the redheaded stepchild of the NFL since their inception 31 years ago... but nobody knows, or is willing to admit, just how good they really are... they're worth your consideration! :)

(Go ahead, RB community... insult away... our feathers create a natural barrier so everything bounces off...)

First round draft pick for the Pats in exchange for a disgruntled WR that didn't want to play out his contract or take an "insulting" $6 million/year with an $8 million signing bonus? I'll take that.

Though, I question the 'Hawks for paying dearly for Branch (1st rounder + $39 million/6yr. deal) but letting Steve Hutchinson, an all-pro OG go to Minnesota. We'll see how that works out for them over the next couple of years.

Yeah, they're all gambles. IIRC Steve was a bit of an injury liability, and they might just have that hole filled with younger talent. And we still got Walter. The O line is shaping up pretty nicely, I think. SA's going to need the help - I don't care how healed he is, or even thinks he is; I don't think he'll ever sniff the TD record again.

Then again, we DO play in the NFC Worst... ;)

Steve never had the injury bug. He did break his leg in 2002 and missed 12 games. Other than that, he's started all 68 he's played in his career.

The contract was the sticking point. Hutch claims he wanted to re-up with Seattle during the season and get things out of the way. He claims the 'Hawks told him to wait.....and wait.....until he finally got an offer he couldn't refuse from the Vikings. It did contain a controversial "poison pill" clause that was good for Hutch and bad for the 'Hawks, meaning they had to let him go.

Jones is a very good OT and Seattle may very well have some young OL talent but it's hard to replace a perennial all-pro Guard.

My first post in this forum because I'm a Lion fan and usually would not have much to say or brag about. Its been a long time since the Lions started 5-2. If Keven Jones stays healthy from here on they might make the playoffs. Kitna is not great but he been steady and plays hard which is what I like about him.

Hmm no chemistry huh?...lol....let's see...not only are the Pats winning...they are KILLING teams...(except for the colts which was exactly the game i though it would be between the two best teams in football)

Brady to Moss...god I love hearing that!

Oh and I used to have a little respect for Don Shula (even though he was a Dolphin)...but for him to mention that maybe there should be an (*) in from of our record when we go 19-0. !st of all the pats got caught in the 1st quarter of the 1st game of the season...and since then we have been BLOWING teams out....lol

Good for Shula I say. I mean he was the coach of the last team to go undefeated. So hes basically obligated to say something to protect his turf. No biggee in my book. He thinks cheating is disgusting and coached that way himself. Would it have made a difference? Most likely not. The Pats would probably still be 10-0 at this point although if you ask me I think it only gave them incentive to throttle people even more to prove themselves. So ironically, this whole cheating thing may actually help New England in the long run because of its motivational ability. But it will always haunt them unfortunately.

And whats with the going on 4th down when yer blowing a team out by 30 or 40 points? Kick a field goal. Dont make enemies.

All that being said, Ill admit I watch Brady throw touchdowns with glee since hes my starting quarterback on my fantasy team ;) Thank god I decided not to take Reggie Bush with that pick!

Somehow, I doubt the "good 'ol days" of football were always so saintly. I've no personal knowledge of Shula's coaching tactics but I've read and seen plenty of tactics used by players of his era that could be considered "cheating" and "disgusting".

Shula need say nothing. His accomplishments speak for themselves and badmouthing another team does nothing but potentially tarnish his legacy. Be classy. Even if the other person may not be.

I've debated this with some others, and scoring points - be it 3 or 7 - shouldn't earn anyone enemies. The only risk is to the winning team's health. Freak accidents happen. Should they happen on what some consider a meaningless play, that would harm the team. I'd be more worried about that than hurting a professional football player's pride.

Oh I know why Belichick does it. Its not necessarily to embarrass the other team and their coach. Its because, according to his logic, hed rather risk giving the ball up inside the other teams ten and have his defense deal with them deep in their own territory (where they are unlikely to get far enough down field to score) rather then kick a sure field goal and then kick off and risk a big run back on special teams. Its just logical to him. His offense is great. His defense is great. So let them both control the ball as much as possible. However… I still think when you are up that big you kick the field goal and risk the kickoff. They aren’t going to lose either way. The injury factor AND the respect factor do play a role in that. Although having said that, for the sake of my fantasy team Im hoping they don’t pull Brady for the last couple of games at the end of the season…

Possible. But my guess is new commish Goodell would personally kick that man's rump outta the league.

Probably, but frustration and adrenelin makes one very strong...and very stupid; and some of these "Wanderlik(sic)Wonders" don't have far to go!

Sure, why not? Although I'm not too confident the outcome would be the same; Moss was always a Packer killer when in Minny, I'm sure he'd relish the chance to do it again. :(
