I got into homebrewing because I want to duplicate a beer that I used to drink when I lived in England. It was at an ancient pub in Middle Tew called "The Faulkland Arms" They had an old ale in a cask near the floor called "Old Roger" which apparently translates to bottom of the barrel. Without a doubt, an outstanding brew. If you are ever are near the place, you won't be sorry. Look for the Tews (upper, lower and middle) just west of Oxford.

What is the best beer you've ever had?

that is one of the most difficult questions for me...i find that my favorite beer is either the favorite beer of the moment, or a favorite beer in a style...often times it's not just the beer, but the occasion the beer was consumed.

i've never been able to answer that question.

*sigh* so many beers, so little time!

i think, however, that i'll go with the fullers special vintage of whatever it was called....great evening, great beer, great food.

I cannot answer this for the simple reason that I don't have a favorite. I enjoy so many different beers in so many different styles that I can't narrow it to just one. Now, if you asked me which of my home brews I like the best. I would say it is the aged 1 year version of my strong amber (8%abv).

you were able to let some sit for a year? the longest i went was 4 months on my stout....it was even better from the aging, but i only aged one 22oz bottle.

It wasn't easy. I am currently storing another 8 from a different batch of it that was bottled last March.

that is a tough question... i would say that one of my all time favorites, a beer that never lets me down, is victory storm king imperial stout. i have tried quite a few (all though not all of the better ones) imperial stouts , and i always come back to this one.

as far as homebrew, right now it would be my double bock (Terminator... "i'll be bock" (hope everyone gets it! ), it was in secondary for two months and i set aside a twelve pack and 1 750ml fliptop bottle, its been in the bottle for 11 months now and every time i open one it gets smoother and smoother. this was the first homebrew that i said wow, this is really a great beer. but i am waiting to see how my barleywine turns out now, it been in secondary for almost 4 months now, hope it turns out as well.

Have a recipe for that one, perchance? ;)

I agree with B3s.... "This is the best beer I've ever had" is usually the thought going through my head just before I hear the dreaded sound of the keg going dry. This time, though, it has happened a bit early. I made a batch of Austin Homebrew's "Blonde Ale" that I think is the best beer I've made to date. Very suprising, since it is just extract, no grains, but it is fantastic. I think I'm gonna cry when I hear that sound this time. I liked it so much that I'm gonna brew it again this weekend!

If we're limiting it to commercial brews, I have to say that a lot of my perception depends on my mood at the time. There are times when Arrogant Bastard is liquid gold to me and other times when I can't stand the smell of it. I really like Lagunitas IPA, too.

I know the feeling - I have an Oatmeal Stout on tap right now that is on "half-pint" only alert. Which is to say I'm only allowing myself, at max, one half pint per day. Man it's good.

Currently my overall favorite commercial beer is Rogue's Dead Guy Ale.

Yards Brewing Co. is releasing a beer called Thomas Jefferson Tavern Ale which is based on the publicly available recipe that Thomas Jefferson used to brew.

This has got to be one of the best beers I have ever tasted.

On top of that, It's a commercial clone of a homebrew. (Isn't it usually the other way 'round?)

Right behind the TJ, my next favorite has got to be the Rochefort 10 deg. A beautiful trappist ale.

Orval, with out a doubt is the best I've ever had. I intentionally don't drink it that often just so I won't get tired out it. Next would have to be Guiness (in Ireland). I'd always heard it tasted different there, and it was indeed true.

I am currently tweaking the recipe. I want to change the hops a little and boost the alcahol more. Not a lot just another 1-2%.

Samual Smith's Oatmeal Stout is without question my favorite commercial beer. My Amber Lynn Ale is a close runner up.

i think they are releasing 2 new brews like that... forget what the other is called. regardless, i'm a big yards fan (except for their trubble de yards- a sour beer that seemed a bit too sour for me.. i still have a bottle of it aging in my basement though, hopefully i'll really enjoy it in another year or 2!)

anyway, as i've said on here before, if i had to pick a favorite beer, it would be the yards esa from the handpump!

Amber Lynn....mmmmmm....boy that name brings back memories of my college porn watching days! (that is who you named it after, isn't it?) What made you name a brew after her? (not a bad idea I might add!)

I am a big fan of English/Scottish Ales, so I would have to say my favorite commercial brew is a toss up between McEwan's Scotch Ale and Morland's Tanner Jack---fine brews, I think. As far as favorite homebrews, I made an English Pale Ale clone called Old Yankee Ale last year. My 1st all-grain batch and my best, I think. I'll probably make it again sometime over the winter with a couple tweaks here and there for a little more malt flavor.

It was an amber ale, and she has always been my favorite female porn star.

She is a little old now. She used to work with Ron Jeremy a lot. That guy is the man. I was just now inspired to brew a Hedgehog Ale. In fact, I am going to brew a whole line of porn star inspired beers.

The best beer I ever had was the last one. I hope it is not to long until the next one.

I'm not certain I'm entirely comfortable with drinking something that has a "rich creamy head," AND which conjures up images of porn stars at the same time. All you need is to let that slip in mixed company.... "Mommy, who is Ron Jeremy, exactly?" :p

That Schlenkerla I had for breakfast one Oktober morning at the brewery in Bamberg back in 1993 Ranks right up there and Oud Beersel Gueze is a phenominal brew But, and its a big but, I think almost any British Cask ale in a nice comfy pub would probably win hands down almost anytime. Woodefords Wherry or some nice mild brown.

You guys may want to go to Vegas in January. They always have the Annual Porn convention there. Also at the same time is the annual consumer electronics show at the same time. (CES is the worlds largest). We always take a "Business" trip at that time to be there for some of the football playoffs. (I 'll be there Jan. 8-12). Anyway, the porn stars are always walking through the casinos wearing flashy clothes or in some cases wearing almost nuthin! I think most of them stay at the Venetian.

Any idea where I can obtain this publically available recipe? I looked around a bit and this was as close as I could get.

What a tough question. I usually like the beer I make the best, but my favorite commercial beers are Pilsener Urquell (especially drinking it in Plsen, where it's made) and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

about 8 years ago, I was camping with my wife at Enchanted Rock in central texas. Its near a little German community called Fredricksburg. Anyway, it had been pretty hot, and we had been 'roughing' it for a couple of days so we got washed up adn went into town where we decided to eat at a little restuarant.

I had the Wienershitznel of course, served with a Spatan on tap. I don't remember which spatan... It came in a large, heavy stein, and aroused an aestetic response in me like no beer ever has. I like Spatan, but it was the combination of things that led to my intense pleasure over this beer.

Yamaha, My schlenkerla experience was sort of the same thing. Everything was right. Perfect moment. I even took a picture of the beer sitting on the table with the sun glinting through the glass. It was a combination of surroundings, mood, weather, and taste. Just a perfect beer.

I had a similar experience with Smithwicks Ale in Dublin. I was drinking a Carlsberg, I think, and got to talking to a local, and he kind of scoffed at me and bought me the Smithwicks. It was great! I would love to try to brew some of that myself one day.

I remember the 1st Further festival after Jerry Garcia died. We went to the Apple River show in Wisconsin. I stopped at a store and grabbed a sixer of some stuff called Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. I had never had it before, but it looked like a good brew. Got to the campground we were staying at and it was miserable hot. We got camp set up, and were sweating like bastards, we decided to have a J and some beer. I opened that SNPA and in that sweltering heat I drank it and enjoyed it as much as I have enjoyed any beer. The J didn't hurt either. The next morning when all the good brew was gone, we went to the tube rental place to go tubing on the river. They sold beers there, nothing but swill. We each grabbed a sixer of PBR, jumped on an intertube and started floating, the sixer of PBR was great when floating down the river with a bunch of jackass buddies. Sometimes the beer is not as important as the setting.

I agree it is a fine beer. I made a special trip to that brewery I liked it so much.
