I'm ready to make a starter for tomorrow's brew day and I noticed the light DME I bought yesterday is Pilsen Light DME. I'm going to make a half gallon starter for a 10 Gallon batch, so I'll be using around a half pound of this stuff.

Do I need to boil this for an extended period to avoid DMS or has the process of producing the DME already taken care of that?

You aren't going to be using much DME for your starter. Just let it boil until it hits hot break. That's enough to drive off the small amounts of DMS. Cool it down, and pitch.

Thanks. That makes life easier.

The DMS precursors were boiled off when the DME was made at the manufacturer. Extracts are already cooked.
