This is a seasonal release from Bridgeport Brewing Co. here in Portland OR. It is a bottle conditioned beer that I think is very good. A deep amber almost garnet in color. Nice hoppy aroma. First mouthful is a wonderfully complex assault on my tastebuds. Toasty, caramel, malty sweet finishing with a crisp hop bite at the end. I think I am going to need another 6 pack or more to get thru the holidays.

Where'd you see it, Hopjack? I love that stuff, but I didn't think it came this far south.

it doesn't ,but at beverages and more (in brea) they carrie some bridgeport products. they have stores up north and ship the beers from there themselves . i love the i.p.a. go down the 57 exit imperial highway head west to randolph and make a right go straight across in to the shopping center across the street from the mall .i think it's on birtch and st college . i think thats probably the closest one to you..or you could check them out online.

Hopjack, you should give the Pintail a try. It is good. I also like the Black Strap Stout.

Obsidean is a good stout. Very heavy on the roasted barley I think.

Pintail is described as a copper ale. I haven't had it in a while so I can't breakdown the flavor profile for you. I really like it, though.

well they're both good breweries with solid reputations , as far as i know, so i'll have to give them a try! my wife loves stouts, and i think i've only had one copper ale before, it had a couple of people on mountian bikes in the forest on it or something....the beer sucked .

Hopjack, you and I need to get together. I can reminisce about Portland (or other Oregon) beers while you try them for the first time.

Of course, if I drink too many, I might get downright weepy...

A drinkin' session would be good. I would like to nominate Lucky Baldwin's in Pasadena, and Goat Hill Tavern in Costa Mesa as the meeting place.

Of coarse, I'd do it anywhere else too, seeing as beer would be involved.

Ah yes.... Ebenezer! Fond memories of then on December 16 '03 while partying leading up to the Lord of the Rings Trilogy Tuesday! They became a favorite of mine afterwards. Last year I missed seeing any 6 packs in the stores where I had gotten them, or finding any taps at the alehouses that had it years past, and this year I'm out of the states for winter, which means I miss out on all the best winter ales like Bridgeport Ebenezer. If you see this on tap or a bottle in a store cooler, order a pint or a part of a sampler, or buy a bottle! I highly recommend giving it a try!

Traditional holiday beers are strong warmers, not your usual warm weather drink. Being late spring/early summer down under, how are holiday beers brewed-marketed-accepted -- if at all?

I always liked having a winter in summer when I was in Washington. I'd save a bottle of Winterhook, Ebenezer, Alaskan Winter, 2 Below, or Jubulale to drink on the summer solstice, and I'd save a bottle of Twilight ale to drink on the winter solstice.

The 'summer' beers here are usually of the honey & wheat variety, with Barossa's Bee Sting being one of the best in my opinion. But being that here in Queensland, its pretty much 'summer' all year as far as I'm concerned, so lagers are the order of the day. There is more seasonal variety with more microbrews down south in Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania where the weather is more seasonal, but the craft brewing is working its way north through New South Wales, and the west have a few good ones as well. Liuttle Creatures and Beez Neez are a couple that I've tried.
