My father just got back from visiting my sister and her family in Regina and brought me back 8 beers from Paddockwood brewing.

2 Black Cat
2 Czech Mate
2 Rye IPA
2 Bock

I've got them chilling but won't be able to drink them for a few weeks. If anyone has tried them can you offer an overall opinion and what I should expect from them?

My father and brother-in-law in Regina had a few and weren't overly impressed (not sure which ones they had)...

My Dad's a Buck-a-beer/James Ready type guy but my brother-in-law was a huge Upper Canada Rebbelion fan when they made it, so he's got a beer palate more akin to mine.

Black Cat is simply one of the best beers I've ever had. I did get a bad bottle once, but otherwise, it's always been a delight to drink.

The newest batch of Czech Mate is supposed to be hoppier than ever. If you like Pilsner Urquell, you will crap yourself over how good a fresh domestic version is.

Rye IPA is another pleasure to drink. Don't expect an all out PacNW style hop bomb, but instead it is a well crafted, sturdy IPA with a complex malt backbone (with some spicy rye notes), and a nice blend of citrus/woody hops. My only concern is that the bottles in Regina were likely sitting on the topshelf in the liquor store for the last 12 months. This beer does age very gracefully (I had a 2 year old bottle a couple months ago that was fabulous), but the Regina ones obviously have not been stored in prime conditions.

Let us know what you think, IMHO Paddock Wood makes some of the best beer in Canada.

Hey Mark;

If you like their Rye IPA, try the Red River Ale I brewed and posted in the recipe section.
It's got that same taste, although I'd cut the 1 lb of Red River Cereal down to 1/2 so it's not so overpowering.

I boiled the cereal for 20 minutes to gelatinize it before putting in the mash, but since it's flaked, I'm not sure if that step was necessary.
