View Full Version : Gotta Quit Drinking For Awhile...

I've been having terrible stomach aches lately, for a few weeks now.
It finally got bad enough for me to go to the Dr.
At first, I thought it was an ulcer. I've had ulcers before.
Bad news: I have to stop drinking for awhile. I was diagnosed with IBS.
(Irritable bowel syndrome.) I have to buy a juicer & start juicing for awhile to increase my intake of fruits & veggies.
I told the Dr. I couldn't eat fruits & veggies very well, because of my dentures. That's when he suggested the juicer.
More bad news: A decent juicer costs $300 or better.
He also put me on a few different meds for my problem.
He also told me to get some Metamucil for bulk "roughage".
Lovely, huh?
Good news? I can still brew. I just can't drink it yet.
My Dr. said he'd check my progress in 2 months.
I guess this is a perfect time to brew a Dopplebock or a Barleywine.
Wish me luck...

That sucks TF, but I thought you didn't brew anymore. Time to do some meads, BW, maybe an imperial stout. Something you can brew now and drink in 6 months or later.
15 years ago I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease. The doc put me on steroids and several other meds. My condition worsened to the point that after 3 months I had developed arthritis in my hips and knees and there were lots of days I could not walk. Sometimes I would just fall down. After 5 months of this crap I went to New Mexico University Hospital and met with a Crohns specialist. After looking at all my test results he concluded all my problems were the meds my doctor had me on. 2 months later I was med free, pain free and arthritis free. Be very careful with those drugs, they can do much more harm than good sometimes. They never did figure out what was originally wrong but it never came bask so who cares.

You could try checking with a used restaurant equipment dealer for a juicer. It is a long shot but might save you a couple bucks.

Good luck to you TF. If my doctors ever told me I had to stop drinking, I'd cut way back...;)

I actually have a couple of Barleywines in secondary for a little over a year now. They'll just have to age awhile longer.
I was thinking of brewing a nice big Dopplebock, & letting it lager for 6 months or so.

I have a Jack Lalane power juicer, I think they may have an internet special running for about $100.
Its a well built machine and I use it mainly to juice apples for cider. You can sometimes find power juicers at Thrift stores right next to the bread machines and waffle irons. Give 'em a good inspection though.

Try Ebay or Craigslist.

Yeah more people have unused juicers laying around than you could imagine.

When you do juice add some ginger root as it's famous for helping stomache ailments. A little goes a long way as ginger root is very strong.

I got one of the "Jack Lalane" juicers at Costco a couple years ago for $99. It may not be as nice as the $300 ones, but it produces juice just fine.

Well, you may have been un-diagnosed, but.......

In all seriousness Triple, good luck. I'll think of you when I hoist a pint.
