Is a hydrometer reading effected by the presence of malto dextrine? MD is not fermentable; however, it must have some effect on buoyancy.

Pretty much everything contributes to the SG of your wort, whether it's fermentable or not. That's why lots of brewers keep specialty malts to a minimum, they tend to make the beer heavier. Your FG will be higher also so keep that in mind at the end of fermentation.
