I made a 5 gal. batch of porter yesterday and the fermentation was going great this morning. I left for several hours and the top had blown off the fermenting bucket (plastic). The air lock did not appear clogged and I put the buckety top back on. Is this batch probably done for?

No, it just means you have healthy happy yeast who are working their collective asses off to make you beer!

That is one way to look at it. The yeast are so happy that when they blew the lid they kept working. While working they continue to give off the same gass that built up and blew the top. So this gas also keeps nasty things from geeting in. It is worth while to keep your yeast healthy and happy.
BEER CAN BE FOOD,BUT FOOD CAN NEVER BE BEER.
