Well, CAN you?

Seriously though, I've run out of bottles and was wondering if I can buy a cheap case of macro-swill with twist-off caps and then use them for my homebrew. I know, I know...a new case of bottles is only about $10, but I'm a Cheap Bastard. Most of my family drinks cheap domestic beer that comes in twist offs bottles so I'd have a ton of bottles if they're usable. Are they usable? Thanks!

I beleive the threading around the neck of the bottle will chip under the strain of the capper. That will cause them to not seal properly. If you can find a case of beer with non-twist-offs (double dash! I am a gramattical marvel!) you would be better off.

I could be wrong, it has happened before.

I've heard that they are usable, and with regular caps they are still twist off, but sometimes the threads may break or the rim may crack with many uses, becoming undesirable to use repeatedly, or if you have to buy them. But if they are free and you have a steady stream of them, use them once and then into the recycler.

Yes, they are usable. You might have a bottle here or there (i would guess 1 in 50) that chips or doesn't form a good seal.

I've done it but I've noticed that they often don't seal right or the cap doesn't look like it's all the way on...once had the top of one just break while capping. I'd reccomend against it
