People have asked me before about removing the ink from commercial bottles.

I have many coke and 7up bottles that I soaked in a bath of muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid). The acid softens the inks so that they come off with some gentle soap and water washing. Works good.

The acid is strong so don't get it in your eyes or on your skin please. It's sold as drain cleaner in some places. Maybe ask a plumber what's in Drano. Sounds to me like it could be the same thing.

Hydrochloric acid is what worked for me. Maybe there is an easier, less rubber-glovey way. I'd love to hear.

Drano and others like it contain sodium hydroxide and/or potassium hydroxide which are strong bases.
