I have read recently that several microbrewers are beginning to market their beer in cans. Tommyknocker Brewing, Big Sky Brewing, Sherwood Forest Brewing, Magic hat and Even Dogfish Head are either using cans or have considered it according to Mid-Atlantic Brewing News. Any opinions out there? Is this good? Bad? waddayathink?

Or Golf....

I know there's alot of discussion out there (and has been for years) about how the taste of beer is affected by a can, but I can't say I've ever had what I would consider to be a craft brew in a can. Can anyone vouch for the taste? Is there a siginificant difference?

I'd love a good micro in cans. Now, when I'm at the beach or hanging out in a parking lot before a concert, I generally get Heineken cans or even Miller Genuine Drafts. Murphy's or Guinness 'CO2' cans are good too, but usually a little heavy for summer/outdoor drinking.
I suspect most of the taste issues related to cans comes from either icing the beers too cold, or from not pouring the beer into a cup or glass before drinking. Both easy to fix.

This stuff comes out of CO, and it is indeed canned. I'm trying to tell myself that I can't really taste the aluminum, and that I'm just imagining it, but I'm not sure. Dale's tastes like canned Sierra Nevada to me. Not bad; I'd still rather have the bottle. (And YES, I poured it into a glass first. What, do you think I'm nucking futs or something?)

firkin nuts maybe...:D
im not sure about the whole can thing???
just doesn't seem right to me...but then i've never tried a real beer out of a can? or have i? most kegs and firkins are aluminium arn't they? i guess i'll have to wait till one crosses my path and make a better judgement from there. but im pretty sure it's going to suck! kidding of course , with that attitude im sure it will.

All I know is if I can get good beer in a can for fishing next year, I am gonna do it. Dragging bottles down the skunk river to go catfishing is a pain.

I used to get Becks in cans as well, but haven't seen them in awhile.

Portable, Recyclable, and absolutely no chance of beer getting exposed to light. Plus the interior of all beverage cans are lined so the metal never comes in contact with the waiting wobbly pop. That metal taste you think your are getting – it’s in your head.

I for one, can't wait for my favorite local brewery to start canning!

One of the things I dont like about aluminum cans is the poor quality of the label graphics. In the 70s when I collected cans, all of the newer cans were ugly. I am a label collecter (as well as a Breweriana collecter). I like the paper labels better. This might be my only objection. That and the psychological bias in favor of brown glass.

what about the outside of the can? you could taste the metal then i imagine, if you didn't pour it in a glass cuz you were catfishing on the skunk river. :p

Catfishing sounds like a perfect reason to drink beer. Where's the Skunk river?

Maybe I don't notice the metallic taste because I usually drink out of tankard.

I wish I was fishin right now.

I'd be will to try craftbrew in a can. I saw that article, too, and it got me curious.
I suppose no matter what the vessel, it should still be decanted, if possible (i.e., you're
not fishing or golfing or worki---oops, wishful thinking!)

In Iowa. I grew up in southeast Iowa, still live in eastern Iowa. It is great catfishing. Used to catch 25-30 pounders all the time. The huge ones seem to be less prevelant these days. The 2 pounders are the best for eating anyway. I love catfish.

Hey, Brownbeard:

Living in Iowa, have you ever stopped by John's Grocery in Iowa City? I've heard about the place for years, and even bought a few pint glasses off their website. It's one of the places on my list to visit if I'm ever in the area - just want to know if it's worth the trip.
