View Full Version : Does filtering affect water minerals characteristics?

I usually Britta filter our tap-water, or liquid chlorine as we affectionately call it round here.

The filtering takes a bit of time I know, but it does shift the Cl.

My question is, does it alter the characteristics of the dissolved minerals also?

I don't get too scientific, but I do usually try to rough match the water character of the beer-type. I was wondering if I am now starting with a total unknown.

Nope, you basically need reverse osmosis (RO) to strip out the minerals and salts. RO+DI if you truly want a clean slate to start adding minerals back.

AMcN,

We are assuming that Brita uses an activated carbon filter.

These filters do a good job at removing organic compounds, sediment, etc. and are generally good "taste and odor" filters. As Yeastmeister says "Nope." Activated carbon does not remove minerals.

Your water in T.O. should be good once the chloramine is gone.

I am forced to start with distilled or 18 stage RO water. Blessing or pain? The tap water here has to be boiled and after carbon filtering taste remarkably like the sea.

Count your blessings eh?
