Wondering what a good wheat beer was that would be easy to get at the beer store. I've never had a wheat beer so would love to try one, and its a beautiful day out there today. Any suggestions?

Schneider Weisse(sp) is pretty damn good, but I don't know if you can get it in Canada. Sam Adams has a summer white beer that's very tasty also, I had it in the airport in Houston last month.
My two favorite's are Weihenstephan and Hacker-Pschorr(probably misspelled both).

I'll second Schneider hands down.

After that I'd look for any of the big 6 breweries from Munich along with Weihenstephan and Ayinger.

Hi boys;

Isn't Hoegarden a wheat beer as well? (along with orange peel and corriadner)

Hoegaarden is a Belgian Wit, sort of a cousin to a Bavarian Weizen and a second cousin to Berliner Weiss. American wheat is the second cousin, thrice removed of all the others.

Yea kulman, Hoegaarden is a wheat beer. Very light and tasty. Another good one I tasted in OK City last month was Boulevard Wheat, I think its brewed in Kansas City.

Steve - can you expand on the difference between Bavarian Weizen and Berliner Weiss? And perhaps a couple of samples of each.

Cormac.

The Berliner is most often a very low ABV brew with a lactic character to its taste - akin to Gueuze, but more mellow. That sourish character has made it popular, over many centuries, to add fruit and herb juices to the beer to smooth it out - usually raspberry or woodruff.

Berliner Kindl is the one I've sampled most often. It's more available these days than it has been in the past.

Bavarian Weiß - well, Hacker-Pschorr, Paulaner, Franziskaner, Weihenstephan -- they all define the style to a T. Phenolic, clovey, spicy, banana, bubble-gum aroma and flavor characters with a malted barley and malted wheat backbone - hopped in good balance with typical noble hops. Moderate ABV.

The Schneider is a Bavarian Weizen, but it has different character; more mellow and smooth - darker in color than the above examples mentioned -- but it's a terrific variation.

I kind of made a wheat beer ....

Used 9 lbs. 2 row and 1 lb Red River Cereal (consists of flaked wheat, flaked rye and flax).

The result? While it did have the taste of Red River Cereal to it ... I don't recommend using flax in beer. Drinkable, but not one I share openly.

Note: Any beer by La Brasseire McAuslan is very good. They are out of Montreal, I haven't had their wheat but their "Blonde" (Pale Ale) is a treat.

The Apricot Wheat is one of the best fruit beers I've ever had.

The best wheat beer available in most parts of Canada is Unibroue Blanche de Chambly from Quebec, a belgian witbier which destroys Hoegaarden and Rickards White.

I have a bottle resting comfortably in my fridge as we speak. I'm glad you speak so highly of it; I can't wait until I have a warm day to take advantage of and the time to drink it!

I've never had the Rickards, and I'm not too crazy about Hoegaarden nowthat Imbev owns it, but the Blanche de Chambly is a great beer. I wish I could get it here, but I have to drive to Midland TX to find it.

I'm guessing that you have tried the Rickards... it's Blue Moon marketed under a different name in Canada.

You're right, I did drink 3 bottles from a sixpack. I have no idea what happened to the other 3 but that was one very uninspiring beer.
