Hi all, Forgot to ask when corking a bottle of wine should there be any space left between the cork and wine? or should cork and wine be touching? :D

I may have no Idea what I'm talking about here as I've never made and bottled wine, however, I believe every bottle I've ever bought has had an air gap between cork and wine. I have also been under the impression that wine should be stored/aged on its side so as to keep the cork moist.

When I bottle wine, I try to leave about 1/2" (1.25cm) of airspace. Sometimes there's a little more or less, but for me it doesn't matter much because the bottles will be empties pretty soon. If I planned on laying botles down for aging it might be more important.

Just use a bottle filler, it will leave the right amount of headspace.
