I was watching the food network earlier, and though using cocnut sounds like a tasty sort fo idea, espicially in a stout.
So are there any pros or cons here. And what would the proper usage be, and since many coconut products exist, what type to use?
And if any of you are wondering, I get me coconuts in Mercia

The only thing I can think of is the coconut oil may ruin head retention, and WortChillerGoal will be knocking on your windshield even faster than the cop.
Ha! Beat ya to it, Wort!

I've never thought of coconut before, but that just might make quite a tasty stout.

Coconut does go with Chocolate.
A note here that Coconut milk (and oil) is some durable stuff. I make a Thai Curry (yum). The first thing you do is boil a thin layer of cocunut milk in the bottom of your pan on high heat until it separates. The first time I did this I thought I would burn it. Nope. No burning, no scorcing. It didn't even turn brown. It separated after 20 minutes. The point is that whatever negative effects the oil has on head retention, the average method to alleviate this may not be as effective.

Well, just so you know, I wasn't going to use that remark here. Instead I thought I would say that oils can wreck head retention faster than a smile with braces.

In a general reply......
I considered that cocnuts do have a lot of oil in them, and I figured I might add a bit of oats, and maybe some wheat to counteract the effect of the cocnut oil.
I was thinking that the dried stuff used for baking might give good flavor with less oil...I am thinking wrong? Would fresh cocnuts be better? What about using them in the boil? Or would I dry 'nut the beer....hehe....
And apparently, no one here picked up on the orgin of the coconuts I plan on using....shame, that was a good joke....

The only recipe I've come accross was a coconut stout and they used extract at bottling. If you try this, please keep us updated on the effects of the oils. Sounds like a yummy experiement.

Schilling makes a coconut extract which can be added just before bottling.
Curry of any flavor makes me double over in pain.

Great thread...and good timing too, as I had an idea (different) for coconut also.
My debate was to include coconut in the boil or "Dry coconutting" or both...something I was considering for a blonde, "Coconut Blonde" if you will. :p Perhaps she'd be a Colada Blonde if I add pineapple.
Anyway, I'll read through the links a bit more, to figure out how/when I add the coconut. Thanks Boerne for the coconut topic...
