View Full Version : Ran Afoul of the Beer Gods

I brewed my Nice, Boring Pale Ale (pronounced with irony) today. Everything went great. No problems getting exactly the ingredients I wanted. The malt smelled biscuity and nutty. The hops smelled spicy and citrusy. The beer was the best smelling beer (on the stove, anyways) that I've brewed. In fact, the house still smells good. This was shaping up to a wonderfully complex, fun-to-drink, nice, boring pale ale.

But, alas, the beer gods were not looking kindly upon me today. The freakin' thermometer broke. I don't know how, but the thermometer broke. In the wort! Thus, my afternoon's labor was contaminated with broken glass, little metal balls, and very likely other stuff that has no place in beer.

I've never had to dump a batch before. It actually hurt.

This sucks.

Exactly. It is a test. That batch you dumped was a sacrifice to ensure future rewards.

Your sacrifice was received, they have belched their appreciation.
Your next brew will be heavenly.

That hurts. I've gotten rid of any breakable thermometers, now I use a digital one with a SS probe. Were actually pretty cheap at Harbor Freight.

Give up now.

All is lost.

Okay, don't give up. Worse things have happened to people.

Learn from mistakes and do it again.

We all have.

Spoken like a true Sox fan. They actually won the series on my birthday in '04. Going to see them in b-more next week. It will be good, but it's no Fenway...
