View Full Version : Coffee Urn Mashing.

First off I want to apologize for this.

I started homebrewing a few months back with a Mr. Beer. Since then I have been doing some research and came up with my own recipes and used ingredients from the local brew supply shop. That being said, I figured I'd experiment a little. I bought a few pounds of raw barley and I am attempting to make malt myself using these guidelines (http://byo.com/feature/284.html) . I have a basic understanding fundamentals of the mashing process.

Now for the question,

Has anyone thought of or tried using a coffee urn to mash in? I'm thinking of picking one up second hand and I figure that it has a false bottom, temperature control (some models), why not give it a go.

that could work for a same amount of grain. I'd suggest you try mashing some malted barley before giving your home malted varieties a go.

I tried to mash in a coffee pot (http://www.realbeer.com/discussions/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6961&highlight=coffee) a while back, but I had lautering problems

Thanks for the coffee pot thread.

I'm going to give it a go. $4 of barley, a cheap coffee urn, spring water. I'll let you guys know how I make out.

Not unless you do it leaning against a lamppost on a street corner with a woman of negotiable virtue.

I like to negotate a woman's virtue from time to time.... I guess that makes me a dirty old man.

Intrinsic describes a characteristic or property of some thing or action which is essential and specific to that thing or action, and which is wholly independent of any other object, action or consequence. A characteristic which is not essential or inherent is extrinsic.

Well my dream of making my own malt will have to wait until I do more research.. Apparantly everything was going well, and I was leaving it for a bit to sprout. After 3 days I went to check on it and almost vomited due to the horrendous smell coming off of it. Smelled like wet laundry forgotten in the washer for a week.. Maybe I didn't allow enough air into the bag.

I think you're supposed to check it every day and air it out/stir it up if it starts to go slick.

Well what I did after soaking it was put it on a baking sheet lined with paper towels and put it in a clean trash bag to keep moisture in... I think you're right though. Oh well I'll do that next time I give it a go.
