View Full Version : Priming Sugar in the mix

So, I decided to get a kit and make my second ever batch of beer about a week and a half ago now. The first one was a Mr Beer kit :( Anyway, as I was cooking and whatnot I found that I had this one last ingredient left over, the priming sugar. I kinda looked around real quick and could not see it listed anywhere so I figured they forgot to put it on the list of what to add. So I cut 'er open and dumped 'er in there. About 2 minutes later I remembered from my first time (about 2 years ago now) that I put something in the bottles... Flipped to the bottling instructions and there it was.. Priming sugar.
Now for my question: Is this batch gonna suck hard or do you think it will be ok? The Hydrometer showed a finished density when I moved it to the Carboy..
If it is even worth messing with what should I use when I bottle? Please keep in mind that I live approx. 70 miles from any 'real' grocery store (Walmart, Affiliated, etc.). The small town grocery in town has a limited selection.
My only idea is if it turns out bad to get a few gallons of whiksey and mix them...
Thanks!

You'll be fine. There shouldn't have been enough sugar in that package to make much, if any, difference. I always prime with corn sugar, but you can also prime with white sugar if corn sugar isn't available. Check out this page for the specifics.

I agree. The priming sugar isn't a big enough quantity to make a difference in the batch. You just need more priming sugar now. I tend to keep a basic supply of things like that around and I have a LHBS 4 miles from me.

I also concur with the replies you have recieved so far...5oz of corn sugar wont harm the batch...wont even raise the gravity enough to notice....now if you live that far from civilization you can order it online from here...http://www.austinhomebrew.com/index.php?cPath=178_21_73_404

A lot of co-ops or community food stores where they sell stuff in bulk will have corn sugar. I have heard of people using Karo corn syrup to prime when in a pinch but am not sure at what ratio it is used.

I was going to do this a while back after I forgot to buy priming sugar, but after doing research, I figured that it mightnot be a good idea....too many comments about not using the right ratio, making sure the syrup does not have additives, etc.
For hwat it is worth, I think using equal volumes might be safe, but provide you with a slightly lower carbonation level.

I am fairly happy to report that I used Cane sugar. The resulting brew tastes fine, kind of like Sam Adams Boston Lager to me. At least that is the nearest beer I can compare it to!
The following day I came down with a sore throat though, so I have not had a second one yet! Will try one later tonight.
