Eddie-
I remember now.
I have encountered hangovers that last for more than one day even though I didnt drink a ton of beer. Im thinking alot of it had to do with the lack of sleep factor to. I will have to remember the milk and fatty food thing. I tried a new beer called JW Dundees Honey Brown. Has anyone tried that beer. It is mild with a hint of sweet taste. I liked it alot.

I think it is a Genesse Brewing product. Have not tried it.

I think I remember trying it once in college. They were selling it for $8.99 a case. I think I remember thinking it wasnt bad, but then again the night before I probably drank Old Milwaukee. I should probably give it another shot.

i usually stick to beers with only four ingedients (the only four ingedients)and have a pint of water or two before going to bed , and most of the time wake up feeling great. i have never (even when drinking and mixing the hard stuff till i passed out) experienced a hang over that lasted more then 24 hours.
you may be having an allergic reaction to something?
my friends mother can't drink wine , something they put in it to help preserve it gives her an allergic reaction (a bad hang over).
most beer she's okay with though.
never quite understood the hangover thing, never had one regardless of effort or quantity of sleep...some call me lucky, i consider it a curse as there are no repurcussions to my wayward lifestyle.
some of it, i am sure, is metabolism, some due to training ;) , but i tend to attribute it to the fact that i drink about a gallon or more of water per day and always a pint or so of water before bed and plenty of vitamin B (no, not vitamin beer in this case, but the full b-complex). another factor is -- never drink cheap stuff (was just commenting on this today...there is only one kind of whiskey that should be served on the rocks...bad whiskey)! whether it's beer or liquor (and never, ever, drink mad dog 20/20...shudder...wine should never have the same color as urine!).

If I am not mistaken, alcohol causes dehydration, and a hangover is a result of dehydration. Therefore, I make it a habit that if I am drinking large quantities of any kind of alcohol to drink as much water or gaterade as possible before crashing. Just my two cent's less change... :)

I think that's my biggest issue as well, not drinking enough water.
If I remember, I try to down a glass of water between beers, even if it's just a few gulps while I'm at the sink rinsing out my bottle, then I guzzle a big glass of water before bed with a couple of ibuprofen and typically wake up feeling just fine.
When I get sidetracked and forget....it's a different story.
I also try not to drink on an empty stomach.

I think I would pass on the ibuprophen. Stuff is nasty on the stomach.. I only pop pills unless absolutely necessary... Or for the fun of it! LOL

Too sweet for my palate. Tried it a couple of times several years ago. My wife, however, loves the stuff. There is a restaurant that we frequent that has Dundees on tap, and she drinks her weight in it almost everytime we go there.

Nitrates or something like that, my mom has the same thing she can't drink wine. Anybody know the exact name of it?

Howdy-
I believe the chemical causing the reaction is one of the BiSulfites. Used as a sterilizer and bottle-wash; I know several people with varying degrees of allergic reaction to sulfites, most can't drink any wines...

Any truth to the rumor that the B vitamins in the yeast sediment at the bottom of a bottle of homebrew is a great hangover "pre-emptive strike?" Interesting, if true... as if we needed yet another reason to drink homebrew!
There are several hangover cures on the market... all designed to be taken just before bed. I think they are based on a B complex vitamin... not sure. Don't tend to get them myself; of course, I haven't been schnockered like that since college...

This idea is presented in Pap's book and it makes sense iff alcohol depletes the body of B vitamins like he says. There's no doubt that I can drink a helluva lot more home brew than most commercial beers with less hangover, IMHO.

Ah..the hangover...
1) Dehydration
2) Depletion of B vitamins
Drink a lot of water during the day if you know you will be "over-served" and plenty before crashing for the night (I prefer gatorade before bed, adds a few carbs and some other vitamins)
B-Complex vitamins will definitely help (My cousin is a doctor; it got him and his friends through medical school!)
Yes, there are B's in homebrew, and there are NO preservatives or other unknown ingredients.
If you drink enough, you will get hit...the easy (and hard) solution is moderation...RIGGHHTT! :D
heh...given how i hardly ever follow that stoic advice of moderation (more eipicurean -- eat, drink, and be merry), i shudder to think how much is required for me to get hung over...or even if i could afford that amount!
otoh, i don't drink cheap stuff, i drink lots of water all day long, and i do take extra vitamin-b (good for skeeters, too).

As is also the case with good commercially-produced beer (which is the only kind I ever drink). And I never get a hangover drinking it.

BiSulfites
Ya thats what I was thinking of, nitrates are the things they use to preserve some meats, I think.... then again I was wrong before I could easily be wrong again. :p
