My grain bag scorched on the bottom of the pot so I got to spend a lot of time fishing out little bits of grain.
Anyways, the brew is this:
6 #s NW Amber
1 # 55L Crystal
1 # Durst Malt
1 oz Cascades (75 minutes)
1 oz K Goldings (30, 15 minutes)
1 oz Saaz (3 minutes)
1 tsp Burton Water Salts
1 tsp Irish Moss
Yeast was a dry yeast I got out of a John Bull English Ale Kit (I had originally planned on using the 1.8 Kb of the LME too but decided not too when my grain bag exploded). Started it T-5 hours prior to pitching.
A leaf would fall in every now and then.
Saaz, which I have never used before smelled spicey... and the Wort was a rich red color.
Smells good out of the ferment lock.
OG a tad denser than 1.05
Comments?

uh-oh.. leaves fell in? they could be very toxic. please allow fermentation to comlete, then bottle (or keg) and ship to me for proper analysis.

Hey make sure you note which kind of leaves fell in, the amount, and the boil time so if it turns out great you can re-create it.:D

This beer turned out very well. Going to be a keeper. I might try remaking it with a liquid yeast strain (any suggestions?) but its a good beer as is.

I just brewed a batch with hersbrucker and saaz hops. I spent a lot of time standing over the brewpot because it just smells so good. The first time I used these hops, I used the California Ale yeast. It turned out pretty good. This time I used European Ale yeast. I'll let you know how it turns out.

I love the smell of saaz too. Actually I love the smell of any hops. Especially when you open a new bag. Mmmmmm.
I took some hops to the office last week to see if any of my co-workers would be as impressed with the smell as I am.
I got reactions ranging from "yuck", to "oh that's foul".
I think Micro's are so bland now that most people cannot even recognize the smell of hops.

I don't get it, what's wrong with some people? :D
We love the smell of hops too, but it makes the kids sick....bummer for them.
I missed the smells of brewing over the summer. I did two batches this weekend and would have done three, but we're going to a movie tonight.

there is absolutely NO substitute for saaz hops...the czech republic should be proud of the most aromatic hop available to the world......enjoy them tremendously.

Don't forget Saaz for American Ale's too!
My Alaskan clone, using Saaz as the flavor/aroma hop has turned me on to that idea. I think I'll be using it more often.
