View Full Version : Late fruit addition question

Well, my blueberry wheat beer has been in the secondary for a while now and I'm ready to bottle. problem is, it just isn't blueberry enough. I have had blueberries in the secondary the entire time, but I fear not enough.

My question: I don't really want to wait for a larger batch of blueberries to flavor the beer via secondary, so is there a way I can add blueberry flavor this late in the game? I was thinking something like making blueberry juice out of real blueberries and adding it, then proceed to bottle (after adding priming sugar)?

Any help would be appreciated!

the only thing you could do to avoid waiting is adding a blueberry extract. I've heard that extracts sometimes lend an artificial flavor to the brew, but you won't be adding that much as you have a good bit of real blueberry flavor already.

If you make the juice, you'd still be adding sugars that would need to ferment completely before bottling.

You could just bottle as-is. The blueberry flavor may come out a lot after the beer is carbonated.

Thanks for the response, :) I think I will just bottle now and add blueberries to the glass if I'm needin some more flavor

That's a good idea, and may end up tasting better with truly fresh blueberries. It'll probably look cool to have some blueberries in the glass.

I think the carbonation helps bring out aromas. I'd expect it to carry the blueberry aroma as well. Let us know if it does.

did you use fresh fruit, puree, or extract for this brew?

fresh fruit, I have heard a lot of negatives about using the extracts.

did you put it in after boil or in the secondary?
