Hi all, I'm a complete newbie so you'll have to bear with me...
What's the best sugar to use for priming, and does it make much difference? I've used glucose extract for the first batch (in the wort).
Also, what's the best way of storing it? I've got a King Keg pressure barrel (top tap) but have heard that these lose pressure over time (its brand new). as thinking about keeping some in a seperate bottle to compare in a few months, once I've made more batches...are demijohns OK? I realise that I would have to keep them away from light...and how long should I leave the beer in the pressure barrel before drinking? I'm thinking about a month??

Anyone here from the UK?

Many Thanks for your time (sorry about the rambling...),

James

Welcome to one of the best hobbies ever!

You can prime with anything IMO. The amount of sugar you use to prime is small percentage of the fermentables in your beer and won't effect the flavor. Just make sure you use the appropriate amount for what ever you use.

I just prime with Corn Sugar.

Sorry I don't have any experience with Demijohns or King Kegs.

corn sugar is the norm, i would guess, but the best brews i've made have been primed with dry malt extract...you have to use more (just about double), but the flavor, IMO, is cleaner. honey is also pretty good if you're doing a honey sweetened beer to begin with...hmmm, that honey wheat i got going now might just get primed with honey :)

I used to use corn sugar but now I swear by DME. About 1.25 cups in a 5 gal. batch.

You could try PrimeTabs too. They work great! Three pills per bottle and you're ready to go.

How do the Prime Tabs compare in price to corn sugar and DME?

Don't know how the prices compare all I know is that each "pill" is 500mg of dextrose and you get a bag of 250 for about $2.50. http://www.northernbrewer.com/sugars.html just click the link and check 'em out fer yerself. The prices are about average for other places.
