After the annoucement of the impending sale of Lakeport to Labatt, I asked myself, would I still support Lakeport?

It is clear why Labatt did this, obviously to strangle out a brewer that was making waves, and pull all Lakeport drinkers under there fold, possibly getting them to shell out and extra 10$ for the case-o-crap-Blue, or any other of there Labatt Family of products...

My decision is no. I will not buy Lakeport products. I won't buy Molson or Labatt products either.

I see this as a way of slowly moving up the price of beer in Ontario, which other than Quebec is the lowest in Canada (if you call these prices low that is).

What is your opinion Ontario beer drinker? Will you now support another value brand, sitck with Lakeport to see what happends when the dust settles? Will you change your purchasing habits entirely?

I think you're right about driving out the cheaper beers. Its ridiculous the prices they set. I just started my very first homebrew today, beer is just getting too expensive for a quality tasting flavour. So hopefully I get good at this brewing thing. As for supporting them, I don't know... After Canadian went American I quit buying it. However, I do drink Blue on occasion so I don't know.

umm no offense but any lakeport product I have tried has absolutely horrible, very low quality and not even worth the buck per beer? Labatt's buying them makes zero difference to me, now if they touched a quality microbrew I'd definitely be pissed!

I see no difference in any of the main stream spew any of the big or small breweries pump out....I think it's a lot like Duff Beer, one rusty tap split into 3 pumping out Lakeport light, pilsner, and honey crap.

It doesn't take much to brew a better tasting beer than anything made by Molson/Labatt/Lakeport et al.

I can believe that. Molson and Labatt products are too... carbonated or something. As for Lakeport I never cared for it too much. My first yr of college I drank a lot of it because it was cheap and my buddies all liked it. But there are much better cheap beers out there. I drank way too much Lakeport. I finally said last St Patty's day that I wasn't gonna touch Lakeport for awhile (because I actually had good beer on St Pattys, smithwicks, harp and guinness) and I still haven't touched it a year later. Its just not a good beer. There are some decent cheapies out there, its just not one of them. I've never tried Laker either... doesn't sound too appealing, sounds too much like Lakeport, lol.

I think you are asking the wrong crowd about buying value beer, whether it is from Labatt, or a small brewer. The guys who want to drink cheap beer, even if it doesn't taste great, still have a choice of several value brands.
Most of us on this site are serious beer fans who just don't buy the cheap stuff. So no, I will not support Labatts by buying their stuff no matter what the cost. I would rather spend $5.00 on one good beer than 5 cheap ones.
