I just purchased a ss connical (12gal) last week and tried it out for its maiden voyage sunday. The directions say that the fittings should be removed and boiled to sanitze them, this sounds a like overkill, instead I ran BTF through both fitting and swabbed the internal suraces with the same.

Anyone use one of these and what is your cleaning / sanitzing scheme?

Sorry, no experience here with the things. Guess that's why I envy you.

You can clean it with PBW and then sani with something like Sani-Clean or Star-San. Either/or should be available from your local HBS.

croc, I'd be hesitant to use it without the thorough disassembly and cleaning, at least at first. I'd be concerned about machining oils and the like from the manufacturing process...

When I looked at it, it was very clean and no residue could be seen, so at that point I opted to give it a light rub down and soak with BTF, it "look" clean and I didn't see oily residue. The batch is bubbling away now, so I guess in a few days I'll find out ;-/.

But I think I will follow your advise before the next batch
Thanks for the input

I guess the same could be said about kegging. I just started kegging and I read where some people take the keg apart and clean the fittings. I think this is overkill.

I just soak the keg in TSP for 2-3 days. I push in the poppet top for the Dip Tube to let the solution up. I will tip the keg and shake to get the solution in every nook.

I empty and rinse and seal up until I sanitize it for the next batch.

I think I will eventually take apart and clean, but when? I don't know! What do the micro brewers do? I would think they clean after every batch because of the volume.

We take everything that comes off the tank off of it and it gets cleaned and sani'd every time. To many hiding places for stuff to start growing and be missed.

By removing the pieces for cleaning you will also be able to inspect them for wear and tear and replce them before they cause problems.
