I am an old man who was mobilized for the War on Terrorism. Guess since I'd been mobed in the GW I and spent time in no. Iraq, I got the short straw and was mobed to Germany at the beginning of 2002. My objective when coming here was to taste each of the 5,000+ biers here in Germany. I'm not a conspiracy theory person...but, there had to be a conspiracy because I was sent to Bosnia for 4+ months to go hunting...made me throw off my schedule of bier tasting! SOBs!!

I've been all over the Orient and have drunk biers from over there, Korea, Japan, china, Philipines, etc. I've drunk Turkish bier, even had an Iraqi bier (tasted like pee). When I got here, I was a Bud beer guy until I was totally embarrassed into trying German biers. Omigod!!! I have died and gone to bier heaven!!

Every time that I go to a vill, I buy the local bier to taste it. The differences are amazing..they are very subtle, but distinct in taste and feel and smell. I am stationed at Patch Barracks, Stuttgart-Vaihingen. Here, the local biers are mostly Pils - Stuttgarter Hofbrau, or Swaban Brau..both great Pils, but I am a lager person. The Stuttgarter Helles that's available in now is so good (helles is a lager).

One of the best biers that I've found was in a little vill maybe 20 minutes away from Vaihingen...the local brew was Golden Ochsen (Golden Oxen), what a smooth, easy tasting bier! Now, when I can I buy Augustinerbrau Munchen Lagerbier Hell ( a wonderfully smooth heavy lager), they've only been doing it since1328! My favorite of favorites is Hofbrauhaus Helles, brewed by the city-owned brewery in Munchen since forever! By the way, Hofbrauhaus is where dumb-butt Hitler tried to orchestrate a government overthrow in 1923-arrested and spent bit of time in jail for being a jerk, a jerk who was able to sway millions later!!!!

The biers are brewed in accordance with a Purity Law that was passed in 1516 (or sometime around that!)

All that I can tell you is that I've NEVER had a bad German bier...it's just that some are better than others!!!!

Prost, meine freunden, Prost!!

I am an old man as well and have been to some of the places you mention, good buddy.

I worked in Iraq for a while and was glad there was beer there. To me it tasted like Belgian Stella Artois, and went real well with the pistacios we used to buy in the Baghdad market. The only consolation we had while based there.
Turkish beer is based on German techniques and taste. Effes Pils is really quite decent.

I worked in Munich for 11 years, up near Duesseldorf for 4 and in Prague for 2 years. So I've had a few and encourage you to continue your quest for good beer.

If you read the labels, you'll see the correct spelling: Stuttgarter Hofbräu, or Schwaben Bräu.
By the way, I believe you mean Gold Ochsen, from the city of Ulm.

Now, when I can I buy Augustinerbrau Munchen Lagerbier Hell ( a wonderfully smooth heavy lager), they've only been doing it since1328!
If you like this one , then try their Edelstoff brew.

If you get the chance, go over to Bamberg and try the famous Rauchbier.

My favorite of favorites is Hofbrauhaus Helles, brewed by the city-owned brewery in Munchen since forever!

Sorry, but the place from where Adolf tried to launch his beer-hall Putsch no longer exists. In fact it was the Bürgerbräu Keller, which was demolished.

The biers are brewed in accordance with a Purity Law that was passed in 1516 (or sometime around that!).

Sorry, but the Reinheitsgebot, or Beer Purity Law was originally an edict or decree by the Bavarian king, rather than a law passed into existence by a parliament. Unfortunately observing it is no longer mandatory, so even German brewers can use corn and rice if they choose (fortunately, for the home market at least, all still follow the Reinheitsgebot).
And it could be argued that Weissbier does not conform to this Purity Law.

All that I can tell you is that I've NEVER had a bad German bier...it's just that some are better than others!!!!

Yes, this is generally true, and as any German will tell you, Free beer tastes best!

Prost, meine freunden, Prost!!

Please note that in German all nouns are capitalized, mein Freund!

Prosit! And welcome to the forum. I envy your being in one of my favorite areas of the world - and agree, I've never met a German beer I don't like!

By chance, were you able to attend the Stuttgarter Volkfest this year? It's a wonderful, typically German fest with, of course, great beer! I was lucky enough to attend a few years ago and happened into the tent that was holding its armed forces appreciation day. What an odd sight to see Yanks, Frenchmen, and Germans in uniform all celebrating and drinking beer at the same tables.

Some points for your next tasting session - Pilsner is also a lager, as is Dunkel, Oktoberfest, Maibock, and Bock. The next time you sample a Pils, note the similarities in malt character to a Helles - along with the different hop character, of course.

If you ever get the opportunity, just outside Stuttgart (N.East), in the small town of Untergroningen, is a Braureigasthof called Lamm. It is, literally, a guest house with its own brewery and restaurant. It has great, fresh beer and, while it may appear sleepy during the day, it's quite busy for evening dinners and general gemutlekheit! http://www.lammbrauerei.de/

Prosit!
