View Full Version : Crap on the Burger..........

Well,............ I bought 4 pints tonight... Spent $32 on them. I was hoping to get a few decent beers. Total crap is what I got. What I got resembles what almost every brew I ever get my hands on.... I would say it is the same as having a piece of crap piece of meat and slathering it with BBQ or whatever. What I have come to notice with beers is that if you add a LOT of HOPPS and give it a cool label it must be good right??? Same with a hamburger... Add a lot of sauce so you don't notice the meat flavor then it must be good! Not so!!!!! Just because you add a crap load of hopps doesn't mean the beer is good. You can't say a steak is good because of the sauce!!!! It's good because of the Meat! The same goes for beer. Hey, I have a new recipie! 3 gal Heinz Ketsup, 3 gal water and 10 OZ Noble hops! MMMMmmmmm! A good beer is from barley, not a crap load of hops.....

My review:

Corsendonk: Nice bubbles 2 crap stars!!!
Duvel Golden Ale: Not bad... 2 crap stars!!!
3 Floyds Wheat: Way Too hoppy....... 4 crap stars!!!
Hog Heaven Barley Wine 5-7+ crap stars!!!

I have not bought a beer that I have tasted that was as good as mine. Mostly crap....

Hey, all I need is $200,000 and a Fancy label and I sell my beer.!.!.!.!. I'll have the money in 3 weeks..... Will the wife let me invest it??? Remains to be seen. I think she wants a new house............

Don't forget alchohol. The full marketing equation is: fancy label + buttload of hops + high ABV = $ales

It's the same concept as Starbucks. It doesn't have to be good as long as they can convince people that they're a bunch of uncultured buffoons for not liking it.

I never understood that. It seems like the worse the product is, the better the sales. Case in point, I heard recently that Starbucks realized there was no practical saturation limit to how many stores they could put in a given area. The combination of muscling out the competition and increased peer pressure just converts people into Starbucks drinkers. It's like an Ayn Rand novel.

Steak sauce doesn't make the steak. Nor does hops make the beer. I can't say it enough times. I like my steak plain. I like it that way because I get good steaks. I don't buy a $2 steak and cover up the flavor with sauce.

B_rad:

You seem to be having a little difficulty in really expressing what you feel about highly hopped garbage beers. Just let go, and let it flow out your fingertips. Tell us all just how bad they are. ;)

Whats also amazing is how highly rated those same poor beers frequently are. Go look on beer advocate. A highly hopped crap beer will get a 90 while an excellent session beer will get a 70.

Sorry Mr. Nate. I have to agree with Tom C. While Starbucks is an "Evil Empire", their coffee is considerably better then the Double D's brews. I used to swear by Dunkin, now on ocassions where I have it, some days it's like drinking Tea compared to a cup of Starbucks. And if you're just getting a coffee and not a Tall-Decaf-Skim-One-Pump-Cinnamon-Dolce-Latte-No-Whip, it's nearly the same price as a medium re-used grounds cup of DD coffee. At least in the shops by my work.

If there was a quality locally roasted coffee available, I'd choose that. Unfortunately, within a 3 mile radius of my job there are 5 DDs and 2 Starbucks and No Independents. A sign of the times...sigh.

I would think anyone who could brew his own beer wouldn't have too much trouble brewing his own coffee.

If I could afford it, I would roast my own coffee.

I hate Starbuck's as they burn their coffee, not roast it and I can't stand Dunkin Donut's coffee as they use too high of a percentage of Robusta beans and very little Arabica beans.
Robusta beans (which grows in regions like Vietnam) tend to be bitter no matter carefully you roast them.
Personally my favorite coffee would be a dark roasted Guatemalan coffee. It has chocolate overtones with a hint of citrus in the background.

I do brew my own. Every morning. I just don't carry my coffee pot with me for the afternoon fix.:)

I don't brew my own beer, but I do manage to figure out how to brew the coffee. I've also started to roast my own beans.

Otis, I don't think every variety of Starbucks is over-roasted. The last seasonal -- Guatamalan Casi Cielo -- is my favorite of their roasts. It's very much what you've described. I also like the Asian and Pacific beans.

Speaking of coffee and bringing it back around to beer, I just tried Flying Fish's 10 Anniversary Imperial Espresso Porter. Pretty nice beer.

$15 for a hot air popcorn popper. Make sure you get the kind that blows from the sides and nit straight from the bottom. I plan to start doing this soon - SWMBO needs a little more convincing.

are these the "highly hopped" brews your complaining about? Corsendork and Duvel won't have nearly any hop flavor to speak of - their main flavor components come from the yeast.

Yeah, I didn't get the original comment at all. And I found the crap star ratings hard to understand as well. Of the beers mentioned, I've only tried Duvel and it is an amazing beer.

I'll argue about the Hog Heaven....IMO, a good american barley wine, but you really need to enjoy that style of ale.

I will agree on the McD coffee...it actually is pretty good, and at the very least more economical to swinging by Starbutts. We don't have a DD here, so I can't comment about it. That does not mean I grab McD often....only when I am traveling.

Which Three Floyds was it again. Hoppy wheat beer sounds alot like Gumball Head, which IMO is a great beer. Was it the Gumball Head?

I roast my own and I bought 5 pounds of green Vietnamese beans. It was awful, the only bean I haven't found a roast that tastes good. I usually drink Guatamalan Antigua, Colombian or Sumatran.
Back to the OP, I don't know anything about the other 2 but the Belgians are anything but hoppy. Maybe a little too sweet but certainly not hoppy.
And I like a lot of crap on my burger-grilled mushrooms, grilled bacon, grilled onions, fire roasted green chiles, and at least 2 cheeses.

I actually find P&J hoppy for a Mild. Nice beer, but hoppier than a traditional one. I think every FFF beer that I've tried is hoppy, actually.

I just had an all around bad taste in my mouth about the beer that I've tried lately. I think that most home brewer's can out do the major companies. JMHO. I was just venting. I feel much better know. My point being is that I would like to see some beers that focus on the barley, which is the hard part of the recipie. Hops are easy.

MrNate

I don't think it's so simple as hops are hard and barley is easy, it's that the balance is difficult.

I love Fuller's, I like Smithwicks, and I'll drink Bud. But A-B couldn't sell me a six pack of Bud for $8 by hopping it like Fuller's, which is essentially what a lot of these breweries try to pass off.

And like Starbucks selling burnt coffee and calling it gourmet, they've managed to get away with it, while the Brewerati look down their noses at the McDonalds brewereies of the world and their technically flawless and arguably better product.

And for the record, I get my coffee from QuickCheck.

I like beer. I'm not especially fond of Bud, I won't pay for Corona, and I simply don't get why people drink light beer (or eat low fat and sugar free anything) when the far simpler and cost-effective option is to drink or eat smaller portions of something that is really good instead of consuming mass quantities of fake food. But there are few beers that under the right circumstances I'll turn down flat.

I do look for value--I'm pleased with my Sam's Club case of Sam Adams Brewmaster's collection for $22 bucks--and of course I'll save the bottles. I also just bought some pricy beers that the guy at the beer store recommend, but I only got one bottle of each. I'm looking forward to trying the St. Bernardus Pater 6, but I'm going to make sure I really, really like it before I go for a case of it. On the other hand, a case of Old Milwaukee for $10 might find its way in my fridge this summer again.

Sam's has some odd ones some times. I bought a case of something from a St. Louis brewery (not Bud) can't recall what it was. Nice balance with their hops.

It was Schlafly. They had 4 different 6's in the case. All were pretty good.
