View Full Version : Vote for One
If the evil empire took over all the breweries in the United States and were going to close all but one micro brewery. They were going to let that brewery brew their beer just as they do today with no interference. Only thing that they were going to do is make this breweries beer available nation wide like their own beer. They decided the vote of the Realbeer members was going to decide which brewery they were going to keep open.

I can routinely get Stone IPA and Arrogant Bastard here, but none of their other beers, so I can't really form an opinion on Stone. DFH 60 Minute is awful darn good, but I really don't care for the 90 Minute or the Indian Brown, and I won't touch the Raison d' Extra with a ten foot pole (I mean, honestly: raisins? Ick!). I've had a couple Great Lakes beers and remember them fondly but not in great detail, so it's hard to form an opinion there. I find Rogue's beers to be inconsistent. The others I just can't get here. But Victory...ah, there's the Prima Pils, the HopWallop, the Storm King, and the sublime HopDevil. Yep. Victory gets my vote.

I had to go with Victory for the sheer variety they offer in both ales and lagers and the fact that they are mostly readily available to me. Oh, yeah, and Lew Bryson just reported that they're reviving Heavyweight's Perkuno's Hammer Baltic Porter!
My second choice would be Smuttynose. They would've been first, but for the lack of a pilsner in their lineup. I think, besides the big beer series, they only have 1 lager available year round. All 4 main seasonals are ales, too. But they still totally rock.

I went with other. I wuld hire a bunch of Jedi knights to combat this evil empire. They will work juast to have a few of the beers that they would save.
It was a tough call between my beloved Michigan made Bell's or the buckeye state Great Lakes. I'm really sorry but I had to go with GL.

That list seems to represent a regional bent. I suppose part of that has to do with where you are located and what is available. Most of the beers on the list aren't available to me locally so I've had sparse exposure to them. Nothing from Colorado even?

I had to put Two Brothers Brewing on the map here with an "other." I think the regional bent here is genuine, and for a genuine reason. Beer is not always a happy traveler, and when craft beer is transported by the folks who are used to schlepping sex-in-a-canoe beer, their habitual lack of care with their volume products may carry over to the handling of craft beers that would actually benefit from some TLC. I buy my TBB straight from the brewery, in sight of the brew kettle, conicals, and bottling line, and I don't think too much bad happens to it over 15 minutes in the back seat of my Jeep, and it shows.
For my favorite craft brewer on the list, it'd have to be GL.

I stole that list from the top nine of the thread WHATS YOUR TOP FIVE BREWERIES. I did not do my homework to see where all these brewries were from. Another thing is I could only list 10 but had 15 I wanted to list.

Of that list, I can get:
Stone
Rogue
I chose Rogue because of their huge variety. At the public house in San Francisco, they have at least 20 beers to choose from - a taste for everyone.
I'm sure the others on the list are good breweries, but having not tasted any of them, I have no way of knowing if they could be my one brewery.
Oooh - that is a horrible thought, isn't it? Maybe I will arm wortchillergoal's Jedi knights with empty Rogue 22 oz bottles.

I'm not questioning the choices on the list, just making an observation. There is a concentration of board members in the areas represented by the beers on the list. Given that I live in the middle of the SouthWest, I have a different selection available. The brews I've tried on the list are not better that what I can buy locally (by my tastes).

voted for Rogue mostly for their wide ranging available styles. from the basics to the funky and everything in between.

I'd go with Dogfish Head -- I just love everything they make.

I went with Rogue. They have a brewpub that I pass on my way to work every day. I can't even count how many different (awesome) beers are available in there, and there are more every day.

Very tough choice. There are other breweries that I like more so I chose Other. But on that list, I'd probably have to go with Bells or Great Lakes. Some of the breweries on the list are a little one dimensional or have too many "weird" brews. I've not had enough from Capitol to consider that one. New Glarus, Troegs, Sly Fox, Penn, Russian River, Three Floyds, Pizza Port, Odells, and others probably could make your list too. And Some of the chains make some excellent precision lagers. Gordon Biersch does a fine job. Locally Capitol City, Sweetwater Taven and Rockbottom / Chophouse make some very solid offerings too.
The Evil Empire takeover made me think you were talking about whats been going on with Old Dominion. Lots of chatter and discussions on DC-Beer about that. I've not fully formulated an opinion that I wish to voice on that issue yet. These changes there could be good and they might be bad. Too early to tell right now.
I vote other because I think Deschuetes has a great, solid line of beers. Regional perspective, of course!
BTW - I have been able to try beers form all the breweries on this list with the exception of Capitol, through various trades on this board.

I can get beer from all of them except Capitol and Great Lakes. Great Lakes beers sometimes make it to DC or at least have in the past and the Brickskeller has had Capitol. But my exposure to Capitol beers has been mainly from beers I got from Steveh. I once attended a tasting with Andy (Tveekerham? - I can't remember) Who was at Great Lakes a long time ago. He brought fresh GL beers in and they were excellent. I think he has long departed that brewery but may be wrong about that.

Other - Three Floyds (FFF) - mommie was born in Munster and the disturbing label art reminds me of the sixties.

Good Call....rather, Outstanding! (Can you tell I've been at BA this morning?)
I too would employ the Jedi, though I might sneak a few off to personally stand in front of the two Allagash buildings...the current, and the one under construction...
Maybe I can even get one to bring some of the stash down here to Georgia too...

Sex-in-a-canoe sounds like a good name for a beer, Among other things.
I am awful, I read the entire thread and this pops out at me.

Sounds too &%*#&%$ close to water to be the name of a good beer.
I had a couple of Oberons last night and sure would hate to lose that beer for the summer time.

Would you prefer "Sex on the Beach" then?
Oberon will let anyone pop their top.

Andy Tveekrem has been at Dogfish Head for three years, according to the most recent issue of BYO.

All pretty good choices. Had to go with Victory in the end. Love the Hopwallop! Storm King is also wonderful! Also, Victory is among some of the great breweries located here in PA.

I voted other because of my one favorite beer in Atlanta Georgia. That would be Sweetwater 420. It's such a good hoppy beer. Full bodied. Plus they have a nice sized tasting room and an interesting tour at their brewery.

I had to go with great lakes, simply because of location, I've been able to try more of their beers than any of the others. . .and gl always satisfies my quest for a good beer. . .I've yet to tast a weak link in their line up.. . .

i agree that based on the regional bent of the choices (midwest and east coast) that three floyds and troegs definately need to be added, with the current choices i would pick DFH, though i have always been biased towards them. I know alot of people here think they make alot of "hit or miss" weird brews, and i agree, but to me that is ok as long as they keep producing a few staples that are always good and stay that way. The only complaint i have against them is the switch from the chicory stout from a year round to a seasonal, before that i thought that they had a nice variety of consistent always drinkable regular beers that gave a nice backbone to their experimentation, some of which are good some of which are pretty awful. I also must add that having been to the brewpub several times, i've had alot of beers that were made in the small tanks there and never bottled, some of which were really really good. Ok way too long a post but i'll finish with saying that i'd give troegs a second and brooklyn third, mainly for the sunshine pils and mad elf, and the black chocolate stout, that said there are alot of drought only brooklyn beers i have never had, so if i visited a whole foods in NYC i might be inclined to bump them up a few notches

I'd dive straight for Ommegang, but they dont have enough variety to sustain a life long bender.. I love Great Lakes, and Bells... and Dogfish.... Brooklyn has a great variety... Victory is OK.. I'd have to go with Brooklyn honestly. they have a great standard lineup of "go-to" drinkable yet tasty beers and they have a more high definition lineup of better caliber choices as well.. very tough choice though..
