I'm just wondering what are carboys used for outside of the home brewing / wine making industry? Were they developed just for us, or do they have other uses in other industries?

They were once used for water, Deep Rock and such back in the days before plastic. They are also used for industrial acids and corrosive liquids.

I've seen ads in BYO magazine for a plastic carboy that is supposedly impermeable to air and doesn't impart plastic flavors to your brew.
Anyone had any real life experience with this? i know brewing in the plastic carboys that office coolers use is a no-no, but if this is a good product i'd love to have a couple.
After breaking a carboy last spring (and gashing myself in the process) i'm dying for a safer alternative...
