looking to see if anyone has a clone for this or could whip up a recipe from the description. also, i'm not familiar with the Alchemy hops & what should be substituted if not available. i'm assuming they are using Columbus/Zeus interchangeably & not both. thanks for any input on this. AG or partial extract.

Broken Halo IPA is a beer produced in the spirit of traditional IPA products shipped from the UK to India in the late 1800s. The almost excessive amounts of Cascade and Columbus hops used in Broken Halo give it notable citrus and grapefruit aromas and flavors. The beer bitterness measures high but tastes smooth due to the full-bodied, Caramel malt sweetness. The finish is juicy, clean, and short lived. A devilishly bold, heavenly smooth India Pale Ale.

availability year-round
bitterness 45 IBU
alcohol by volume 6.0%
original gravity 14.25° PLATO
malts PALE, CARAMEL 10L & 20L,
carapils
hops ALCHEMY, CASCADE, zeus
goes well with SPICY HOT FOODS LIKE MEXICAN, ASIAN DISHES, OR HOT WINGS

Trailer trash, where are you located? We always like to know where our brethern are.

Though I have never heard of the variety...form the Widmer Drop top amber descripton: "...the Alchemy hops provide soft bitterness...."

Maybe Alchemy is a proprietery hop blend?

But since it is not available to my knowledge, I'd go with the other three hop types listed. Tread lightly though, A little Columbus goes a long way in 45 IBU, but from the description, I might think that a majority of the bitterness might also come from late kettle addtion, after all, what do you think those masive amount of Cascades do besides give flavor and aroma.

And if the color on the web page is any indication, be sure to use plenty of Crystal malt.

hey Boerne, i'm in the DFW area. thanks for the reply.

i found the following posted on northernbrewer forum by Matticus:
========================================
I use a blend of Magnum/Warrior/Horizon in alot of my beers as the bittering component. It's the blend that Widmer uses (they call it their Alchemy blend).

I like it alot, great bittering potential but nice and smooth. I use alot of it and columbus, albiet I think columbus is my favorite.

i'm guessing that's why i hadn't been able to find any info on Alchemy hops being availble. i'll get some of each ordered & roll my own. hopefully it's something as simple as 1/3 of each.
i'm learning to use Beer Smith program & can hopefully get a working recipe yet!

Though I have never had the beer, i would figure dry hopping to be cascade and columbus, ditto for the boil, but lke said...never had it...
