The Harvest Moon has been brewing beer in downtown New Brunswick for about 6 years. I have been stopping in since they opened but I always thought there was something not quite right about the beer. The same off flavor was in all the beers. They went through a number of brewers in those 6 years and the odd flavor remained. This really depressed me since this was the closest Brewpub to my home.

On a recent trip to Atlanta I stopped in to Max Lagers. To my surprise I found a pile of Ale Street News. Over a few IPA's and Fish & Chips I read that the Harvest Moon had a new brewer. Upon returning to NJ I made it a point to go to the Moon and try the new brewers offerings. To my surprise and delight the beers were very, very tasty and they did not have any off flavors. I had the dry-hopped ESB from the handpump first and I was impressed. I subsequently had an ESB, a Brown Ale and the brewers version of a mild ( at 5.5% ABV). All were quite good. I spoke to the brewer, Matt, at length and he assured me he will have 7-9 beers on tap at all times. He really has a passion for brewing. I am looking forward to spending many more evenings in NB.

Has anyone visited The Harvest Moon recently? If so, what did you think?

I have to agree with you folks. The Moon has improved tremendously since Matt has taken the reins. The first beers from him came out in September and he's now up to full steam with variety. I met him in October and have to say that he's a real nice guy who likes to have input from the real beerdrinkers in his crowd. This is his first gig as a head brewer and he's finally brought the Moon back into the NJ beer scene.

Since NB is a college town I thought for sure when I was at Harvest Moon in Feb'02 and they had 2 "not so hot" house brewed beers on tap that the days were numbered for this as a micro. Glad to see they pulled themselves back from the brink!

I believe a Maibock is due soon...cheers!
