View Full Version : A question about a few glasses I own.

I own a large variety of beer glasses, and a couple of my glasses (my delirium glasses and a caracole glass) have a design on the inside of the glass at the very bottom of the goblet that seems to be some sort of chemical addition to the glass. It appears to send of ALL of the bubbles of carbonation up from this point. I was just wondering what they did to the glass to make the beer react this way.

ANY imperfections in a glass will be a natural nucleation point for carbonation bubbles to form around, so this isnt necessarily due to chemicals.

The glasses all have the same bullseye pattern at the bottom , which is why I asked the question. I thought they may have treated the glass to get it to react this way. There were no stickers or packaging that may have been held down at teh bottom of the glass, and no amount of scrubbing will remove it.

Many bavarian glasses for Weizen have a little rough spot at the bottom to make those bubbles.

it's just a sharp corner on a smooth surface that causes co2 to come out of solution. They put it on the the bottom in the center so that the bubbles rise through the whole beer and bring out the aroma of the brew.

Thanks! That's my nice bit of new info for the day. Very clever.

Several champagne glass makers etch designs in their glasses to make unique patterns of bubbles.

I have a nice set of Deuchars IPA glasses that have "You're Due a Deuchars" etched in the bottom for that very effect.

I'm not sure I'd drink any beer who's slogan was "You're due a Deuche!"

It's pronounced "DO - Kerrs"

Well, DEW-kers. I suppose it depends where you're from.

I meant that American version of "DO" (as in "just do it") which is pronounced as you have writ it.
