There's two varities of bottled in the grocery store near me.
Draught - brewed and bottled in Dublin
Extra Stout - brewed and bottled in Toronto
--From the Guinness website--
GUINNESS® Extra Stout is the strongest GUINNESS® in taste and has the highest alchohol content. Originally brewed for export to overseas markets such as Africa, it featured higher alcohol and carbonation levels as well as a more "hoppy" flavor to help the product survive long sea journeys.

Hmm. I'll have to check a bottle of Extra on the way home. It's a dirty thankless job, I know, but somebody's got to do it!
Where is your grocery store?

Yes, it annoyed me greatly to find that some beers that are marked "Imported" are not imported from their country of origin, but from just across the border. It always seemed like cheating to me. *But* I still enjoy Guinness Extra Stout more than the Pub Draught variety.
Another one that comes to mind in this category is Foster's Lager.

In the bottled form I also prefer the Extra Stout. However, my real preference is the canned Draught with the widget poured into a stout glass. The reason is that the canned draught is intended to be poured in a glass, and therefore releases the nitro all at once. The bottled draught is intended to be drunk from the bottle, and subsequently the widget releases nitro each time the bottle is tipped.
Besides, the pour from the can is absolutely a thing of beauty! (Not to mention flavor)

Where is your grocery store? Nothing special ... just one down near Pike Market. It just happens to be the closest to where I work. I think I've seen the Extra bottles in most grocery stores that carry Guinness (Safeway, Albertsons, Fred Meyers, etc).

It should come as no suprise that it is brewed in a different country. What with the taxation on alcohol as it is in Ireland, to cheaply produce a high alcohol beer, and still have it 'imported', they would need to brew it elsewhere.

Well I'll be damned, shore 'nuff - there it is on the label. I knew that Guinness has had a brewery in Canada for quite a while, but didn't know they were using it for such wide distribution. With the popularity Guinness has gained, I guess I'm surprised that the Draught isn't being brewed there too.
Of note, I have a Guinness Extra bottle from around 1979 (sorry, it's empty - first bottle of stout I think I ever had), aside from being a completely different label in design, it has no mention of Canada.

Okay, I understand the concept of high taxation on alcohol in Ireland, but if they make it there, and export it to here, what is the worry of the taxation, other than an assessment on final consumer cost?
Do they tax high on the production? If so, how does that effect the Whiskey distilleries?
I don't think that if you pick up a bottle of the Extra in Dublin that the label says brewed and bottled in Toronto, not with the original brewery right up the street. Using the Toronto brewery to supply the Americas would seem more a logistics necessity than a tax dodge.
