View Full Version : I can drink beer again!
Hi friends, its been awhile since I been here because of cervical disk problems. The herniated disk been removed by surgery and I no longer on any pain meds so I'm back to being able to enjoy beer again.
Unfortunately my fist purchase from my long hiatus was a disapointment. Not because from being a poorly made beer, but because it turned out to be very old beer. I purchased Dogfish Head Indian Brown Ale along with Samual Adams Browm Ale. After getting them home it was then I notice the SA was 1 month past its pull date. So I checked the DFH and found no date code on bottle. I called the 1-800 # and found out the DFH had been printing dates on their bottles for two years and if the ones I have don't have a date it must be over two years old. It tasted like it too. What shold I do? Just let it go and say nothing, but be more careful next time? Or try to get a refund?

I say you should inform the palce where you made the purchase. I would tell them of the two year problem for sure. Letting them know you acquired this information from the brewery. This will let them check that their supplier is treating them right, let them know that there are customers who will catch such things, and gives them the chance to make it up to you.
Glad to hear your feeling better. Sorry that your first beer experience back went somewhat awry.
Thanks Wort. I have another problem. My wife happen to be with me during this purchase. Most of the time I purchase beer on my own. For six weeks I can't lift anything over 5 pounds. I'm thinking that a six pack of beer is more than 5 pounds? Does anyone know the weight of a sixer?

Jake,
Glad to hear that you are feeling better.
I would definitly go back and tell them that the beer was past it's prime. Wort's right, their supplier should know better. That stuff should have been pulled.

SAME!
Welcome back to the wonderful world of beer. Glad your recovery is progressing nicely. I think you should milk the lifting thing. Last year I never had to mow the lawn, carry laundry baskets, unload groceries or any of that. Not just because I was under doctors orders either. I just think that is why we have wives.:D

Welcome back, its good to see a recovering alcoholic. LOL
I think you should ask your wife to carry your beer. You'd do it for her I'm sure, and she doesn't want you to hurt yourself again does she?
If the truth need to be made known I'm afraid she may just see how much I spend on beer:eek:

I'd bring that old piss right back. There is no excuse for a retail store to be selling 2 year old beer (unless it is a Belgian, or something along those lines).

I like many DFH beers, but their saying anything with absolutes can be tricky. DFH used to use labels years ago with a spot on the side to be notched indicating a freshness date. Can't tell you how many bottles I used to see with no notches, making the dating system useless.
I also know that inkjet, laser etching, etc. can be fickle systems subject to maintenance - if it's mechanical, it'll break. And Murphy's Law will tell you it'll break at the most inopportune time. Doubtful that when it goes down, all operations (including packaging) stop. Fairly certain I read about Stone's laser etching system being on the fritz, resulting in some beer leaving their brewery with no dates on 'em - save for a date on the case box.
Now, all this doesn't mean you didn't buy disgustingly old, stale brew. Sounds like you did after tasting it. Just be aware of the above issues. While I applaud any brewery that informs its customers with a bottling date/freshness date, these systems are only as good as the machinery and people in place to run them.
Take that beer back and be sure to inform DFH where it was purchased - hopefully they asked you already.
Cheers!

I was wondering if maybe this sixer just might of got bypast by the date printer. For a beer that might of been two years old I was thinking it would be flat. Not the case here, the beer had a good head for all six pours.
I know here at Realbeer we have discussed this issue many times. I usually check dates codes and wish their was just one code that every one used. You have some that use batch numbers which if you check at their website you can get a date. Others use the letters and numbers that they notch like the Arcadia Whitson I almost bought that was checked B2. The beer was on sale and I now see why. At the Arcadia website B2 date was February 2006.
From now on I will not buy beer if I first cannot find out its bottling date. It seems everytime I let my guard down I find out later I bought beer that was brewed before prohibition
I took my bottles back to the store I bought the DFH and mention the no date on the bottles. We went back to were all the DFH beers were stocked and to his surprise all the DFH beers had clearly dated bottles except for his supply of the DFH Indian Brown Ale. He was greatly concerned, but could not believe any beer in his store could be two years old except for his Lambic and other similar beers.

This thread had me checking my Dogfish head beer for bottling dates and it took me forever to find it, the pale yellow innk on the brwon glass of the neck doesn't show up that well IMO. But at least the date i found was 11-20-06
