Anyone know where to find good beer in Mazatlan? I know Mexico doesn't havea great reputation for beer, but I have been suprised there before. There is a great micro-brewery in Tijuana making fine Czech style lagers. In fact the owner/brewmaster apparnetly sutdies under the brewmasters at Pilsner Urquell. I'd love to be able to find something like that in Mazatlan while on vacation next week, or even just be able to find some of the TJ brand beer as opposed to drinking Pacifico for 2 weeks.

Have you tried Negro Modelo? Very decent (compared to Pacifico)

We stayed at the El Cid Marina. Mainly drank margaritas by the pool while reading a Clancy novel for 5 days. One of our better vacations...

modelo also makes a couple brews called victoria and leon that don't make it to the us. Leon is particularly good. It's dark and roasty but still thin enough to be refreshing.

Negro Modelo is pretty good, I would be reasonably happy drinking that if there is nothing better available. I've also had the Victoria which didn't much impress me, although it was quaffable. Will have to look out for Leon. I am interested to see if mazatlan will have any beer from The Tijuana Brewery available. I know they bottle, but don't know how far reaching the distribution is. That beer was quite good and would satisfy my beer needs if I can get it that far south.

I meant to mention that the victoria had color, but was underwhelming

Just returned, had a great vacaton but must say that Mazatlan is a beer wasteland. Pacifico is ubiquitous. I visited a catholic church and the seats were adorned with Pacifico labels! Negra Modello, at $9.00 a six pack, cost more than twice as much as pacifico or corona and Leon wasn't widley available. I wasn't terribly impressed with it anway. It calls itself a munich style lager, but was way too thin, lacked enough hop character and had too much of that fermeldahyde taste that mexican beers seem to have, to really qualify as such. It went pretty well with the excellent street food however.
