So a couple of my friends tell me about this "beerfest" they're planning for next week. So im down for this first off since im still in college, and I ask what kinds of games. Just the typicals pong, flip cup all the american beer drinking games youll see at any party.

Im about to ask what kind of beer, and I pause and ask if theres going to be "real" beer. The kid responds "bud light". A beer drinking competition this is not, its more of a bunch of bitches looking for an excuse to get drunk.

Well having my staple party beer as brooklyn lager, and after having enjoyed all the dogfish's, magic hats, and spatens I could get my gloves on I figure I might as well go and rip all of these kids new ones. So what, I have to stoop to their level and drink some bud light, only makes things easier for me.

What Id like to do is tell everyone im having a beerfest, and not say what beer (most kids will assume its bud or bud light anyway) but tell them that it's not going to be an amateur hour by any means. Than when the games begin and they see that the beer coming out of the tap isnt light/clear yellow, and when they drink it that it has a kick and isn't so easy to drink(for them at least) well see who the real beer drinkers are.

Just pissed me off when I heard about it so figured Id share.

I don't like hopping tinny quarters or rusty bottle caps in good beer anyway. Nice, friendly conversation about brewing history, process, and enjoyment would be juuust fine.

Thankfully, I've never been to a "beerfest" that included beer pong, flip cup, etc. Been to some killer "parties" like this though.

Learn something new every day.

Like many I've engaged in the drinking game shennanigans, but my mommy also used to wipe my nose. Both are hopefully something you outgrow.

You might want to tell your pals if they want to be taken seriously as adult citizens of this fair land, plinking change into shot glasses or sucking cheap beer out of plastic tubing is not the best way to achieve this.

While I do agree that sitting down, talking, and trying new beers with friends is the best way to enjoy it, I'd really like to go there and teach them a thing or two about beer. And hey, bud light's the beer of the night, so theyll be no guilt in drinking beer in such a wasteful way.

"It's a little childish and stupid, but then so is [college]" modified Bueller quote

I say use SNPA. It's pretty light colored and brite, but it's hoppy (esp to BL drinkers). It's also something they can find almost anywhere should they rise to the challenge

Now why in the world would you do that? What a waste of good beer. If kids want to just get drunk then bad beer IS the best answer (that or Mad Dog...). Why spend $40 on a case of beer if yer just gonna shot gun it all and puke it out later. Different tools for different jobs after all. Be careful of mixing worlds. Most people wont care or appreciate it. Reminds me of my old neighbor who was an alcoholic and drank Ice House beer day and night. And he would sometimes stumble over and raid my fridge for beer and Id find him sitting there drinking german wheats straight from the bottle… Oy… What a waste…

And by the way nothing wrong with certain drinking games. Theres OTHER games besides quarters guys… Theres intellectual ones which I always found to be the most fun. And I don’t see a huge difference with drinking over a round of cards and drinking over a conversation quite frankly. So give em a break. To each their own eh? But not with my case of ABT 12 please…

Then why not set up a beer tasting event??? Have several of the types of brews you are talking about, and let everyone sample some of each. Inform them of what they can expect from each beer/beer style, and then let them take it from there.

And then after the good beer is cussed and discussed let them try their Bud Light again and see if you've made any progress.

I don't bother working at enlightening fools anymore. I offer my homebrew or craft/import beers, but if someone prefers Bud(like my boss) that's fine with me, I'll even buy him a 12 pack when he comes over. His wife drinks my Happy Wife Beer though and she enjoys it, but it ain't his thing. He's 71 and just not interested in trying new beer. When we go to his house he always has Guiness for me-not my favorite but he's making an effort.

When somebody wants to go do something idiotic, its best to not go with them.

I think there's a big difference between enjoying beer and getting drunk. I've played more games of beer pong than I care to admit, and truthfully, the beer is just a means to an ends. If there was another substance that you could drink as much of as quickly as you do with beer pong and get to the same level of intoxication, I'm sure people would use that too.

Now lucky for me, I've outgrown beer pong and other drinking games, but that doesn't mean they wern't fun when I was younger and stupider. ;)

30 years ago my friend Dean Lowder and I were pretty much unbeatable at pitching peanuts into a beer cup 10' away. Thankfully I survived those days, some good friends did not, and I'm now at the point where I'm telling my kids just how incredibly stupid that sort of thing is. They know me well enough to know that I speak from experience so hopefully they'll be smart enough. My kids have grown up with an appreciation for good wine and good food so they have a better chance of starting out responsible, not having to ease into it slowly like I did.

It sounds like the 'beerfest' is going to be like what was popular in the 1970's at the UW-Eau Claire., an event called 'Tornado Watch'. It was held outside on the banks of the Chippewa River near a gravel pit and access was limited by the river and some railroad tracks. It was $3.50 to get in and all the beer you could drink till the beer truck was empty. They also had a flat bed with a couple of generators and local 'house bands' had a quasi battle of the bands contest. It was a low boy which was good as most of the band members got so drunk the vocals were unintelligible and they fell off the trailer.

There wasn't much difference from what went in your body, (yellow and foamy) to what came out (yellow and foamy) except the temperature.

All in all I am glad those days are over and echo what Corky said.

Think about it. COLLEGE. Kids will be kids. Let them have fun. I think most young adults go through the get smashed phase. All we can do is hope that they have enough sense to call cabs or have designated drivers. Wish them a fun, but safe night. I thing the more times one wakes up with a hangover the more one thinks ahead about how much they should drink. I hate a hangover.

Spicoli is right it is college and should be considered a right of passage of sorts. Hopefully everyone will make it, unfortunately not all do. I have fond memories from those days, also some very hazy ones and a number of unverifiable stories. I don't reget it but I don't want to do if over again either. In the long run I learned from it and hopefully others will to.

One thing I have noticed that wasn't touched on, Young people in general just drink to get F'ed up and not to enjoy what they are drinking.
It was kind of the same thing that got me into Homebrewing.
I was living in Utah and they only had 3.2 beer and I had started drinking in California when I was about 15.
The Utah 3.2% beer was giving me a head ache, so I figured if I could make beer that was stronger, I could get f'ed up a lot faster and cheaper. Well as time went on I drank less, enjoyed my beer a lot more and strived to make better and better beers.

I like the premise here though. Take some guys who are just trying to get F'ed up, hand them a decent beer. Tell them how much stronger it is, they'll have it a few times then realized that Natty Light tastes like water

Never argue with an idiot.

The will only bring you down to their level, and then beat you with experience.

this year was the first experience with beer pong as they call it. I brought a couple brews from lancaster brewing company and a couple bottles of mad elf. this was at a new years eve party. of course everyone else was drinkin coors light(horse piss) a couple wanted to try what I had most did not finish the one they popped. I did hook one guy though on the amish pale ale that I had brought. of course I think I did 3 rounds of this beer pong and could not stand to drink anymore of the coors light. but by that time everybody was smashed anyhow but me. needless to say I won. I do not think of this as a pleasurable experince though. I still like enjoyin a good brew while watchin a movie instead of guzzlin down water(bud light or coors light) just to get screwed up. I can think of a lot more stuff to do with my time that is more enjoyable then gettin drunk.

Well the beerfest was last night. It ended up just being a lot of games of beerpong. We brought a case of brooklyn lager and simply dominated. Went 9-3 on the night. Than after that the brooklyn lager dominated me.
