I'd thought there'd been something wrong for a while but he still seemed to be out and about. He's an absolute collosus of the beer world.

Stay tough Beer Hunter!

Sad news indeed. I saw him last Spring and I was thinking how long in the tooth he looked then. I first met him back about 1990. I accompanied him on his tour of Old Dominion Brewing. He had invited my friend and I during a tasting which he hosted at the Brickskeller a night or so earlier. He was impressed that I had a 1st edition of his first book which I had him sign. My brothers had given it for me for Xmas back in 1978. I have some pictures from the Old Dominion tour somewhere. I've had several of his books autographed by him on subsequent occasions that he has come to DC. I need him to sign the Belgium book now. I wish him good health and many years!

I too am truly sorry to hear about this. I have not had the honor of meeting Mr. Jackson but reading one of his books introduced me to the world of good beer and i have never been the same since. I wish him the best and hope for his continued health as well as it can be controlled and pray for a miracle cure.

Amen brother.
I just joined the Rare Beer Club and our next selection is a beer dedicated to Mr. Jackson. I've never met him nor have I read his books except to browse thru them at the book store. Let's all wish him well as he fights this disease.

Wow, that must have been a great experience. Do you mind sharing his impression of the tour/brewery/beer?

One of these days, I'll dig out the pictures. It was back in 89 or 90. Jerry Bailey gave the tour. Keep in mind that back then there still were not all that many micro brewers especially here in the East. The real boom was early to mid 90s with the shakeout occurring in the late 90s. Hard to believe that many of our favorite craft breweries have only just celebrated their 10 year anniversaries.

Michael Jackson the beer expert is a truly warm character as anyone who has met him will attest. Despite running one of the most acclaimed beer bars in the world, I noticed Daisy at 't Brugs Beertje, Bruges is perhaps proudest of the photo of Michael she has on the wall there - it says a lot. Michael isn't big on the US scene, he commands equal respect from beer lovers in Britain, Belgium, Germany and all the other great brewing nations of the world. Sad to hear he isn't well and I wish him the very best.

Michael is indeed very big on the US scene. I've seen him many times over the last decade and a half or so. I have an autographed first edition of his first beer book published back in 1977. While I might not totally agree with him, he has said many times that the USA has the best beer in the world. He loves the diversity of styles and the creative spirit of American craft brewers. My being a huge fan of Real Ale and beer in the UK, I sometimes find that ironic however his point is well taken..
