Finally got to sample the wares at Rustico the other night. Nice space, if a tad on the modern side for my tastes, though the fake old timey downtown location outside made a bit of a juxtaposition. The food was solid, the beers, while way too cold, were in good condition. The selection was excellent. Had the Harviestoun, finally tried the Michigan brewed Celis White (tasty but not quite the classic the TX version was, but I'd have it again), the wife had the Allagash winter special on cask. We both ended up having bottles of Belhaven. My wife ordered the BH but the bartender accidentally gave the server the Wee Heavy intead of the regular Belhaven, but in the interest of peace and harmony I decided to drink it. Forgot what a good brew it is. Most times I get the bottle it's not been handled well but this was in excellent condition.

The music was great. Heard the Clientele's "Since K Got Over Me" which I was told came from the owner's collection (is that you pizzaandbrew?).

While you will hear my music from time to time as well, I am not the owner you were referring to - that would be Michael Babin, one of the three principle owners who also own Evening Star Cafe, Vermilion and Tallula. Thanks for the kind words about the bar! New bottles added recently include Bell's Java Stout, Bell's Expedition Stout, Bell's Kalamazoo Stout, Firestone Double Barrel Ale and Lost Coast 8 Ball Stout. Victory Hop Devil on the engine right now, St. George IPA on deck, and Victory Hop Wallop in the hole.

Thanks. My experience with the places I normally drink cask says that when the weather gets hot the import cask dries up, which I don't have a problem with given the vagaries of shipping.

Can you clarify your terminology?

Is my guess correct?
"On deck" means "up next" and "in the hole" means "after that..."

What I'm really getting at is when is the predicted time that two hearted hits the engine?...... because I intend to gun my engine in direction of Slaters Lane at the closest possible time.

Thanks!

He is a great guy and I'm much looking forward to sixtels of Stone brews being available in the future. Not only were the Pale Ale and Arrogant Bastard fine brews, they also had 10 Anniversary on tap. Also Kudos to Rustico's food both of the trios we sampled and our dinners were very good. And the service also was good. I hope to regularly attend the dinner or glass give aways there. Nice place. Excellent selection of drafts and bottles too!

I heard about that on the radio (WTOP) this morning during drive time. The bottom line for me is that Rustico is a great place. A very decent draft and bottled beer selection, good food and great service. I sincerely hope this "beer pop" thing does not effect the regular business. I'm not at all interested in the frozen beer but you can bet I'll be back at Rustico for the drafts and cask selection and the food. They do a great job there.

Here is the current draft list. I know we'll be switching from Avery's Porter back to the IPA as soon as this keg kicks (tad more drinkable in this heat, ya know). Not too much left of the Stone 10th Anniversary - Victory Throwback Lager will replace it when it is done.

Köstritzer Schwarzbier (Germany - Black Lager)
Lagunitas Pils (CA - Czech-Style Pilsener)
Maredsous 8 (Belgium - Dubbel)
Rogue Dad's Little Helper (OR - American Malt Liquor)
Saison Dupont (Belgium - Saison)
Smuttynose Finest Kind IPA (NH - English-Style IPA)
Spaten Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse (Germany - Hefe Weizen)

Thanks Chris. It was great meeting you and Greg. You guys are doing a great job there. As usual the food and service (Lee was our server) was great. I really like the format of the glass give aways too. Informal and not structured. While I love beer dinners and tastings, and go to many, the give away is informal and comfy. I enjoy chatting with the brewers and reps. Ray and I were also able to introduce Scott and Phil, the Bluegrass boys, to Greg Wiggins and Greg Kitsock, part of the local beer press, who happened to have wandered in. I think that may be useful to all parties. We had a nice time. I'd strongly encourage anyone in our area to visit Rustico and check out the beer and food. The draft selection is large and the bottle selection is too. The food is great.
The Bells Two Hearted is always nice on cask. Thanks for all that you guys (and Lee) do at Rustico. Keep up the excellent work.

I guess we had the last of the cask Hop Devil yesterday! We always love going to this place. Servers are always great (Aaron was manning the bar) . Food is always great. Best beer bar in the area!
Keep up the great work. Then open Rustico II closer to Clarendon!;)

Thanks for reminding me, Chazwicke!! Wednesday the 11th from 6-9, we return to the brewery that started the glassware events at Rustico in the first place... DFH. For every DFH Draft you buy on Wednesday, you'll leave with a beatiful DFH 22 oz snifter (while supplies last). Beer menu for the evening to include - DFH Festina Peche, DFH 90 Minute, and sixtels of 120 and Black and Blue - get'em while you can.
Hope to see you Wednesday.
Chris

Had another fine time at the DFH Glass giveaway last night. I came home with quite a stock of the goblets. The Festina Peche was very good and different than I had expected. I like it very much and at 4.5% it is a nice Summer session brew. The 90 and 120 were fine and as expected. And the Black and Blue was interesting and good although my least favorite of the evening. Thanks again to Chris and Greg for making Rustico the finest non brewpub drinking establishment in the area.

Was great to see Insideous Rex, Thetz and Greg Wiggins there. I saw other familiar faces too.

Was good to see you too Chaz. First time I have had the 120 on tap and I must admit its quite a beer. Normally out of the bottle its too sweet for me but on tap I could taste the hop presence very well mingled with the intense sweetness. Still a little much for me but Id order it on tap again. What I really liked was the 90 minute on tap. Now ive had 90 on tap before many times. Ive even had it through a Randall. But for some reason I found this to be the best glass of 90 Ive ever had. The hop presence was really fresh and fruity in a way different then Ive had it before and the alcohol and sweetness actually complimented it. It was kind of like a Two Hearted meets a Brandy or something. Wow… And I wanted to try the black and blue but there was a line and we had to get to the theatre to see Harry Potter… Too bad. They said its only available on tap in DE.

well assuming the limited release isn't totally gone by then i'd assume it would be on tap in falls church when it opens. I went by there earlier today and it looked good, the people on site told me about 3 weeks until opening.

I heard the same thing from a reliable source last evening. Also look for some special brews when it does open.

We've got another DFH giveaway 8/15. I'll post the menu when I have it. We're gonna have one with Otter Creek/Wolaver's in September and Bell's is in the works for the fall.

Hey Guys - Finished my time at Rustico at the end of July. Have moved back downtown to steer the beer at matchbox. As for Rustico, Greg has started a mailing list, so let him know you want in... As far as I know the DFH dinner with the Mighty Sam C is later this month. Pair his beers with Frank Morales' food - that's good eatin'!!
Hope to see you all downtown at some point.
Cheers,
