YaddaYaddaYadda

WetHopDada (aaargh data. sorry)

OK Gang, sorry for the delay but here’s the bird’s eye low down on the Wet Hop Ales.

Our buddy, Celebrator Beer News Guru Tom Dalldorf, introduced this incredible style to the east coast on the stage of the Brickskeller in 2001. These kegs are extremely rare and wonderfully flavorful, brewed only once a year. This is the specialty beer world’s finest presentation of the essence of what fine fresh hops add to the flavor profile of a beer. Similar to wines Beaujolais Noveau - without the stomping upon of feet whose cleanliness should not be automatically assumed up to snuff - choice select hops are plucked from the vine and transported with the greatest urgency and slightest handling and processing then added to the brew upon first opportunity. This most righteous tweak of the brewing process imparts the most incredibly full and fresh hop flavors you’ll experience.

As you know the kegs developed a major hitch in their getalong en route and didn’t actually get to DC until long after the hoped for hoptime had passed and the speaker, or taster I guess, had to return to his great O’Brian’s brewpub in San Diego, home to tons of hops on tap regularly.

So on Tuesday December 5 in RFD’s back room we will be doing our first ever tasterless tasting!

I know, I know. WOW already! We’re going to open the back room at RFD on Tuesday December 5 at 6PM and go til the manager stays GetOUT! The taps will be set with a fantastic selection of Wet Hop and special edition west coast gems. Beers will be served in the 8oz tasting portion cup at a charge of $5.00 per 8oz serving cup INCLUDING TAX and TIP. Availability subject to change, when the keg empties the beer is gone til next year! At close of business December 5th we will split the remaining kegs and dedicate one tap at both RFD and the Brick to the keg remnants which will be served in the order of which is easiest to reach next. These will be offered for $7.95 for a shaker glass serving NOT INCLUDING TAX Or TIP. By serving the smaller portions on Tuesday guests will be able to enjoy a wider selection of their choices of these beers. We do NOT serve beer in 8oz plastic tasting cups on the floor of the restaurant. Don’t ask. Please. Of course, if you reserved a ticket for the event you will not be charged, not to worry! This is a first come first serve event, there is no entry fee but all attending MUST be at least 21 years of age with legal valid current government issued ID. There are no exceptions to this rule.

Those of you clever little beeroids on the mailing list are now receiving first notification so plan accordingly!

Beers offered are subject to change but as of this printing the selection includes

Pizza Port Solana Beach Low Tide

Deschutes Hop Trip Pale Ale

Siera Nevada ESP - Extra Special Pale

Siera Nevada 20th Street

Siera Nevada Fresh Harvest 2005

Siera Nevada Fresh Harvest 2006

Old Dominion Wet Hop Ale

Nodding Head Wet Hop Ale

Pizza Port San Clemente Rip Tide

Port Brewing High Tide

Rogue Hop Heaven

Russian River Hop Time Harvest

This is the only chance you will get in the area until this time next year to enjoy or discover these incredible beers. If you like hops and haven’t tasted a Wet Hop Ale here’s your chance!

More about the Dogfish Head/Sam Calagione/Extreme Beer book release party

In the back room at RFD, 810 7th St NW (202-289-2030)

Sam Calagione and Doug Griffith of www.extremebeers.com (Check it OUT!) will host an evening featuring rounds of several of Sam’s hugest beers and passaround samples of a bunch of edge cutting extreme beers. Sam recommended two items prepared using his beers that we will serve sample portions of during the event. The book Extreme Beers will be available for purchase and signing by the speakers. All attendees purchasing books will receive free of charge a logo Dogfish Head glass.

Tickets for this waycool event are $40.00 and can be reserved by calling 202-289-2030. Those not attending this event can NOT come in just to but the book! People! Get real!

Sam is an old buddy of ours, Doug however is new to our stage.

Here’s a bit of his bio.

Doug Griffith
www.xtremebrewing.com

Along with wife Patti and partner Frank Payton, Doug owns Delmarva Brewing Craft and www.xtremebrewing.com. Delmarva Brewing Craft is located in Millsboro, Delaware and has been open about 12 years. Doug also built the second brewing system (7 barrel) Sam used at the Pub. That led to other construction and maintenance projects at the brewery when it opened in Lewes. When Sam was writing his book *Extreme Brewing*, he asked Doug to do some editing of the recipes. Upon learning that Sam had no plans for marketing these beers Doug decided that this would be a good opportunity for a website and www.xtremebrewing.com was born. As part of the process of running a website, Doug and some of his brewing partners have been brewing the recipes in Sam's book. Sam has conned Doug into giving up some of his extremely limited supply of these beers for passing around at this event. T
* = pass-around bottles. The following beers are exceptionally rare and in extremely limited quantity, there are not enough for all attendees to pour full rounds of service but all attendees will get to sample at least one of the following list of.. well, see for yourself. Wowsers

* Behomoth Barley Wine - * Bloodorange Hefeweizen - * Crandaddy Braggot - * Dark Star Licorice Stout - * Ginger Saison - * KiwitBrown Ale - * Port Barrel Aged Belgian Brown - * Punkin Porter - * Sour Cherry Ale - * Tripel 'Round the World - * Wildflower Wheat

The list of beers for full service has not been set but as of this printing will most likely be

90 Minute I P A – Indian Brown Ale - Pangeae - World Wide Stout

The RFD kitchen will serve sample portions of these items during the event as well

Zesty Blue Cheese & IPA Dipping Sauce

The subtle bitterness of the hops in the IPA complements the sharp cheese flavors to give the sauce a zesty bite served with crudites.

Witty Cilantro Mussels

Mussels steamed in beer and served with crusty bread must be the national dish of Belgium.

Traditionally, this dish is cooked with just a few flavoring ingredients to allow the goodness of the beer broth to shine through.

What are the chances of there being some of the fresh hop beers left on the 11th? I'll be in DC then and can jump on the metro for a nice treat.

I missed the thing on the 5th although its probably all for the better since the tastes were $5 a pop. I was at RFD the week before that though and got a chance to try several of the wet hop beers so hopefully they still have some kegs available that they are rotating. Was at the Brick last Thursday and they had one on down there as well.

I made it by RFD last night. This was a business trip so I dragged along my travel partner from work to have dinner. The waitress we got was, unfortunately, not at all knowlegeable about the fresh hops beers and really didn't seem to care whether we got good service or not. It got in the way of her flirting with other customers. My friend was a woman, so I was off the waitress' list. Probably a good thing.

RFD was out of my 1st choice, and 2nd. The waitress went to find out what was available and came back with a Victory Hop Wollop. I went ahead and took it as I really didn't feel like making any more of an issue out of it. The beer was good, but not excellent. I guess I was expecting something that would emphasize the fresh hop flavor and aroma more. I'll be back in DC next month, but won't be visiting RFD. They have good beer, but that's only part of an evening's enjoyment.

I was there last night as well, but in the back room for the tasting. I enjoyed it much. There are going to be some good tastings coming in January and February and Meridian will be happy to note that Bruce Williams will return in April. Also the tastings are going to moved back to the Bricks in celebration of their 50th year. I'm happy that that is happening as I've always liked the upstairs of the Bricks better than the back room of RFD.

Dparsons, I wish I had known you were there. We could have gotten you included in the tasting. There were some good brews there.

I'll have to plan for it next time. Thanks. I'm in DC 3-4 times a year.

Hop Wallop isn't a wet hopped or "fresh hop" beer AFAIK. If they didn't have any of the tasting leftovers remaining they should have just told you so. Sadly your experience is about par for the course at RFD. As much as I want to adore the place (and I've tried and tried and tried), unless I can grab a seat at the bar or at one of those small high tops and order from the bartenders myself I walk right back out the door.

An important and sometimes overlooked truism many beer joints overlook.

I wasn't sure. Victory's site says
"As our annual homage to the hop harvest, expect loads of aromatic splendor and bitter beauty."

Technically Victory's statement doesn't say it is a fresh hop beer. It just seems to imply it. Given that it is a seasonal brew available Nov. 1 (after the hop harvest) I assumed it was.

I bought a "christmas case" recently and they included a Hop Wallop. Since I had half a case of that in my fridge I asked if I could swap out an Anchor Our Special Ale for it and they let me. Is a Hop Wallop really considered a "Christmas" beer?

dparsons

Hop harvest officially. I suppose that means the timing is good for Christmas, but it isn't what I think of as a "Christmas" beer.
