View Full Version : Smuttynose Pumpkin
It was a good pumpkin beer. Pumpkin and spice were not overpowering. Good flavor. Well balanced. Reminded me of a homebrew I ade a few years ago. Not the best pumpkin beer I have ever had, but definitely a good one.

I tried it and liked it BECAUSE the Pumpkin and Spice was understated...
My wife, a fan of the Pumpkin Ale, thought it was a bit too under the radar...

I think it's a matter of taste...
I prefer "a", my wife prefers "b"...
but even she has a threshold. Some of the Pumpkins out there are so much like Pie they're cloying...

I love the Smutty Pumpkin. Have some in the fridge and more in the basement. I like the fact that it's understated in its spiciness - good malt backbone with a hint of pumpkin, fall spices, etc. My wife is a fan of Post Road's Pumpkin - pretty tasty, imo, but Smutty's better.
Now, Harpoon Winter Warmer is a case of a brewer gone stark raving mad with the spices. Nice nose - awful, sickly sweet/spicy flavor. But I'm sure I'll get suckered into buying a sixer in December hoping it's improved.
Cheers!

Post Road's not bad, and probably my wife's choice, too.
(...and Heartland's Smilin' Pumpkin, even if it is overpriced...)
Has anyone tried Buffalo Bills? I saw it in the store and was wondering how it is...Also looking for info on the DFH Punkin' Ale...
...And Blue Moon used to make a Pumpkin Ale in the pre-Coors days...do they still?

I think DFH has produced one of the better if not the best pumpkin beer out there. Check out beeradvocate.com for the reviews. I just posted mine and loved it.

Yeah, I saw a display at the store this afternoon. The first Pumpkin Beer I ever tried several years back. It left no impression on me so I doubt I'll pick any more up.
Cheers!
I agree with Jarod. The Dogfish pumpkin is probably the best pumpkin beer I have ever had. Dock Street used to make a good one, but those days are gone.

had some DFH punkin over the weekend- very very good. was a little expensive at about $7 or $8 for a 4pk, but 7%ABV and a good treat! nice orange-golden color, well balanced, but a little more emphasis on spices than pumpkin. i think the ginger was predominant spice i picked out.

Threecb....it was not impressive, at least not in my book. It was just OK....I guess I expected a little more flavor--a little more richness. It, however, was my first pumpkin beer, but I think I'll try something a little pricier the next time I buy one.

I just had the Buffalo Bill's Pumpkin Ale. I thought it was OK. A little too much spice in the aftertaste. To be honest, if I made a pumpkin pie that spicy, I would be disapointed in it. My pumpkin is getting bottled this week, I hope it is not too spicy.

I agree - Buffalo Bill's Pumpkin is well down my list of tasty pumpkin brews; not especially good in any way. My favorites:
1) Lakefront Pumpkin Lager
2) Dogfish Head Punkin
3) Michigan Brewing Co. Pumpkin
IMO, Pumpkin Beer is a prime example of why I love beer - the seasonal brews that we only get to enjoy for a month or two out of every year always keeps me looking forward to something. Pumpkin Beer is a great part of my Autumn experience, as much as changing leaves or taking the kids trick-or-treating.

I agree, and next up are the Holiday Ales!
I still haven't found DFH Punkin locally, and am itchin' to try it. I was down in Knoxville, TN at the brewer's jam and tried a couple more Pumpkin Ales. Smoky Mountain/Calhoun's had an OK one. Cottonwood/Carolina had a nice, spicy-with-just-enough-pumpkin-coming-through flavor and definitely ranks above Buffalo Bills in my book. I have to check to see if my local BP, Harvest Moon, has tapped theirs yet...hopefully this weekend.
