Brewed a batch of super-hoppy IPA yesterday and as I was trying to feed the hop remnants down the garbage disposal I thought there must be a better way. So what do you all do to dispose of your trub? I eventually stopped and started straining it out to toss in the garbage; dont need a clogged sink, now do I?

Also: I had cooled my wort down to 80, mixed with 2.5 gallons water, aerated and pitched the yeast. When I put my fermenter in my closet the temp hadn't made it under 80 (according to the stick on thermometer). I'm sure i'm ok and that everything will turn out ok, but is there a chance that i nuked the yeast with too-warm temperatures?

Thanks for the infos!!!

I pour my trub on a compost heap, or in some house plants.
They seem to like it.

I'm in complete agreement with croc4. Dump it on your houseplants, or on the lawn. The bad thing about feeding it down the garbage disposal is that hops have been added to beer traditionally to act as a preservative and to stop bacterial spoilage. So, hops are probably the last thing you'd want to dump into your septic system, as the bacteria will not be happy with you, and might go on strike.

Then you will literally be in deep sh*t. So don't do it. :p

well, i live in an apartment, so i have no plants to speak of. but i was thinking 'boy if only i had a compost heap' while trying to send the hops into the sewer system.

I have read, though, that hops are deadly to cats and dogs an, I guess, other small animals; can anyone confirm or dispel this? I've been dumping mine into a plastic garbage bag, piercing it w/ my barbecue fork to drain the residual wort, and tossing it in the dumpster but would gladly compost it if I didn't think I might kill my dog...

Yes, hops are toxic to pets. I found this thread deep in the archives, and it contains 5 links to outside sources confirming it.
