View Full Version : How many Co2 tanks do I need?

If I have 2 kegs, can I run them off of one co2 tank? Let's theoretically say that they can run at the same PSI, can I just split the air hose to each tap? Now, knowing that most kegs will require at least slightly different pressure, is there something special I can get to split and regulate 2 kegs with one tank?

Thanks.

You can run two kegs off of one CO2 tank. You'll need a dual regulator:

This one if your kegs are going to be at the same PSI (or close).

If you need radically different PSI you'll need something like this one.

Unless you're doing something really extreme, say Weizen in one keg and regular ales on the other the first one should do you. I've run some pretty wide swings and just went down the middle with no great harm.

That regulator looks almost exactly like mine, except mine just has one outlet. but that one outlet is threaded in, can I just get a Y like the one in the picture, thread it in, and be good to go? I'm assumg if such an item exists, I can pick it up for cheaper than $50 at the local welding supply, or homebrew shop (though the welding shop usually has stuff cheaper).

Thanks again.

The only thing I'll add here is that you need (or at some point really wish you had a second tank ready to hook up when the other one quits. You can watch the upside pressure gauge and replace the tank when it gets low but not too low, but that wastes gas and I never find that it's convenient to get a refill when I'll be needing one in the next week. Two tanks will help you relax.

The local welding place is easy to get to, and I think it was half the price to fill my 5 lb tank than they wanted to charge at the homebrew store (which is farther away anyway). Eventually I might get a backup tank, but for now, one is enough for my habits. Thanks for the advice though.

just to echo what Mill Rat was saying, your tank won't run out until a weekend when no place is open, and usually right before you're having a party...
