View Full Version : Can a coupler go bad??

I am tapping Smithwicks using a U style coupler, a 5 foot beer run and a british tower tap. I just changed kegs tapping it after letting it sit for a day. My first keg was getting a little bit of foam but was not bad. I usually get about 1/4 glass of foam on my first pull but it is fine after that. Now, on the new keg I am getting 3-4 glasses of foam and I still do not get a clean glass of beer, usually 1/2 foam. My kegerator temp is running 37-41 degrees.

I obviously have an air leak somewhere. I changed the gasket at the beer line/coupler connection. I took apart the tower and reseated the beer line/faucet connection with fresh teflon tape and tightened all the connections. Still foaming. The only other thing I can think of is that the coupler somehow went bad or the keg connection is bad somehow. My next move is to replace the coupler. Can anyone think of anything else I can do?

Thanks

the keg you picked up may have been overcarbonated... pull the pressure release ring on the coupler a few times an hour for a few hours, see if it works any better tomorrow...

Thanks for the suggestion Danno. I forgot to mention that I did that. I let it sit for a total of three days and kept turning down my regulator until the beer was pretty low in carbonation. The heads have a creamy texture now but still a lot of foam. I don't think it is the carbonation of the keg. Thanks for the idea though.

Doesn't Smithwicks runs off of the same mixed gas as Guinness (75/25 N2/Co2). That might affect what's going on.

I'd also check the liquid temperature in your kegerator. I found the air readings can be way off depending when in the cycle you sample. Place a thermometer in water and get the reading from that if you don't do that already. I assume you've cleaned the lines and all the usual maitenance.

Coupler's can go bad but that seems like lowest on the likely scale.

Thanks for the ideas Meridian. The temp reading I gave you is the liquid temp from a glass I place in the center of the refrig. Also Smithwicks runs off CO2 and not the Guiness mixed gas like Cafferys. I am on about my 8th keg of Smithwicks running on CO2 and it has always run fine before. That is what makes this so confusing.
The only other things I can think of is I have a restriction or pinhole in the line from when I changed the keg..or it could be the keg itself.
I guess I am just looking for something obvious that I missed

Thanks
