I heard about trying this on the basic brewing radio podcast, so I tried it last night...I used Mackesons triple stout with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream plopped right in. And it was quite a unique taste! The dark malt and bitterness offset the sweet icecream well. I'm having a brewclub meeting this evening and will be trying it out on all of them! Try it yourself..

I made one using homemade ice cream & guiness draught, it was pretty darn good.

We've had a few threads on this in the past. Experiment with flavors other than vanilla, as well. Edy's Double Vanilla is great. I've had good luck with coffee flavor, and even pumpkin.

I tried this with Harviestoun's Old Engine Oil. The beer itself is a perfect desert beer that I could see drinking with a desert, but once I added vanilla ice cream, I wasn't wild about it. Are there other stouts that might be better to try?

Try Ben & Jerry's Black and Tan ice cream with Bell's Java Stout. Fantastic!

Unfortunately, unless I get my MIL to send me some Bell's for Christmas, I can't get it this far south (not a bad idea though, to ask for some of that as a gift this year).

a guiness float with chocolate ice cream is just about my favorite dessert anywhere.

My instincts tell me that the stronger the flavor of the stout, the less this is going to work. Anyone else feel this way?

I'd think that a good, smooth vanilla would tame any strong flavored stout to a good dessert. Look at what steamed milk does for an espresso.

I decided to try a lump of ice cream and homebrewed dark lager. . . all I can say is.. . . . .wow. . . .I never expected it to be this smooth. Incredibly smooth. . .this should be a turn on drink for people that aren't turned on by beer. . ..

try this one...
Guinness or any other stout for that matter.. with a shot of Godiva chocolate liquor. have them drizzle the shot all around the glass and then pour the beer into it. it comes out just as good as Youngs Double Chocolate (I think much better personally) Richer for sure, and the added blast of alc % is just perfect being that Guinness is so low to begin with..

I was thinking about trying this as soon as we get a nice cold snap which will make me want to drink some stout. I had a Guiness the other day then stepped out into 75 degree weather and almost puked! I have to hold off on the stouts for now.

maybe it's location, but I have never had trouble drinking dark or heavy beers is warm weather. We get so little cold weather, I wouldn't be able to drink them if I waited for "winter"

I actually quite enjoy my homebrew robust porter after cutting the grass. Maybe I'm just crazy

same here, I like heavy dark stouts and lighter beers both year round regardless of weather temperature.

aka bring it back to life (again)

I love the stout float, probably one of the best ways to enjoy ice cream.

Try this though

Use a coffee stout (or porter) <--Lagunitas Cappucino stout is fantastic for this.
Add about 1/4 shot of malibu rum and 1/4 shot of godiva dark chocolate liquer to the bottom of the glass.

Pour your beer over your liquers to mix, then add as much ice cream as will fit.

DELICIOSO!

I've had good luck with a quality vanilla ice cream and some Brooklyn BCS

After dinner I am going to have a Lake Front Brewery Coffee Stout with some Haagen-Daz Original Baileys. Not too sure how it will be but regular coffee and baileys is always a winner.
