my homebrew club had a clone brew competition lastnight. the entries varied from very pale "ales" to stouts and porters.
one of the entries was a Coors Light clone and after much ribbing of the brewer, it was decided he came damn close. the homebrew was very clear and had a slightly darker color. the beer had slightly more body and had a complex taste.
he gave away his secret formula after the judging had taken place. 2 parts light ale to 1 part seltzer water. everyone was beside themselves. very clever and very nice beer.
all 7 entries came close, but this entry was the most unique and clever solution to brewing a beer considered substandard. it took guts to submit and he pulled it off - he took 3rd place. 1st was a Sam Adams Pale Ale and 2nd was a Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale.
without a doubt, in every case, the homebrews had more body and character. some had a rich, complex flavor that killed the commerical brew.
